1992 Bally Doctor Who

I took a chance on this one because I hadn't got a pinball in a while. What a pleasent surprise Dr. Who is turning out to be. I had seen this game numerous times, but never got the chance to play it. It always looked like a dud to me. The playfield looked to be too open with not much to do. I have discovered that this is one of the most fun games I have played.
The Doctor Who I have is in wonderful shape with only a cracked Dalek dome. Everything else is good. The biggest bonus was it has been the easiest and fastest dmd game I have shopped. So I got to play it quickly. I never play a game I buy without shopping it first.
The only things I had to do on the game, was make the ESCAPE stadup targets more sensitive. They seemed to be only triggered by extremely hard direct shots. I replaced the weather stripping with some softer stuff and the result it much more favorable. I also added stripping to the REPAIR targets to give some more protection as I think they come with none from the factory. I also put blue popbumper skirts on instead of red, they look much better as the blue matches the playfield.
I also took a black sharpie, and coloured in the lightning bolts on the flippers. I think they look super. See the pictures below. It really matches the playfield.
I know the top Dalek on the backbox was originally designed to rotate back and forth. If anyone has a copy of the prototype manual, for sale or in PDF format, could you please e-mail me.
I have since changed the topper on my game. My plastic dome covering was badly cracked so I decided to do away with it. I aquired two more daleks and installed them on the top. Now there are 3 Dakleks on the top, all wired to speak. I think it looks great. I will also try to get a covering dome for them, but as of now they are open.

Doctor Who is a superb game. The game is very straight forward and has some unique features. The game is themed after the long running BBC TV series Doctor Who. It features all seven doctors that played the doctor. Each Doctor corresponds to a specific area of the playfield, one is selected at the start of each ball launched, the doctor will enhance scoring in his specific area. There is some strategy here as to which doctor to select, but it becomes a routine after repeated play. I usually select this order of Doctors 1,6,5,3,2,4, and number 7 get selected any time two balls are locked.
One of my favorite features of the game is the upper ramp loop. You adavance the playfield multiplier for ever ramp loop made. Up to 4x, it increases by .5 normally or by 1 if the #6 doctor is lit. Once you make a ramp loop to increase the multiplier, it then only last for a certain amount of time. Then the multiplier drops by .5, until it reaches 1x. again. You also get your name up as loop champion for the most loops made, need not be consecutive loops, just the total made.
Another thing about the machine I am partial to is the 3 way combination shot. It takes a shot from each flipper. The left one up the right ramp (although this can be backhanded), then a shot up the left side with the right flipper, which is then fed to the upper left flipper to make the upper ramp loop. Completing this sequece spells Who and can lead to extra balls and other awards. These are all timed shots. Which can be extended by a lit #3 doctor.
The video mode in Dr. Who, must be set to random in the game settings otherwise it is the same pattern over and over again, and becomes too simple. You just have to jump over items, 1 button for small items, and two buttons for larger. There is a funny video scence after you finish wave 4.
The greatest feature of the game is the mini playfield that rises up out of the main playfield. This is truley a neat feat. After locking 2 balls (or hitting the target in multiplayer games) the playfield rises up one level revealing 5 targets to hit. After completing these targets, 3 hits per, or less if doctor 7 is lit, the playfield rises again. At this level there are 3 gates. Shoot one to start multiball. Middle hole is worth the most, the biggest jackpot. Once you shoot a gate, the playfield lowers and the 2 locked balls are released, then it raises to the gate level again. You collect jackpots by making all 3 gates. Once a certain amount of jackpots are collected, then you an go for Super Jackpot, (or Davros). With 3 balls in play the playfield lowers to the first level (5 targets), you must hit each one then it rasies again for a chance at Super Jackpot. I think you need to keep all 3 balls in play to collect the Super Jackpot. You get your name up for the most amount Super Jackpots.
This game is really fun to play. The jackpots are challenging, and the mini playfield does not get boring or become a hinderence, as many pinball special features do. The only gripe I have with the game is the awful sound. The quailty is the worst of any dmd pinball I have played. The game is a 8.5 out of 10. Would have been a 9 if the sound was decent.
