1992 Bally Black Rose

I played this game a bunch in a smokey pool hall in Toronto. It really grew on me, probably because it was only 25 cents a play. This Black Rose is in perfect shape. It came with the infamous lockbar drill holes. The holes have since been filled and painted over, with excellent results. Another thing done to the game, is the addition of some promotional plastics to the playfield. There are now the black skull and cross bones round plastics glued on the ugly exposed switches near the ramps. The game looks and plays fantastic.

Black Rose is a very underrated game. It doesn’t have a deep ruleset but is just fun to play. All the shots in this game are really fair and not too difficult. The main shot in the entire game is the "broadside" shot to the top of the playfield. What is really good about this shot is it can be made by either lower flipper and must be made near the base of the flipper instead of the tip or end of the flipper. The cannon feature of the game is also neat and is very accurate. Make sure yours is flush with the playfield or wear marks will soon appear.
The one gripe I have with Black Rose is with the multiball feature. You start with 2 ball and can graduate to three ball by locking the current two balls. Which I think is quite cool. The problem I have with this is there is no real incentive to do this, other than the more balls you have the more swiches can be triggered for more points. There should have been some award that was only achieveable if you graduated to three ball.
I have since been informed of another advantage to 3-ball multiball. You spot 2 letters in "SINK SHIP" for each ramp you make. This makes the graduation to 3-ball much more lucrative since sinking ships gives big points.
The vidoe modes on the game, "swing from the riggins", "knife throw", and "walk the plank" are quite good. The video modes get faster and faster as you complete more and more of them.
In general I have a lot of fun playing Black Rose, theme and art are excellent. I just wish there was a deeper ruleset and more advanced multiball. But it fun to play so it gets a 7 of 10.
