1995 Williams Dirty Harry

What can be said about this game? It doesn't have the highest rating around the pinball world. Overall it is a fun game, a bit on the easy side. I bought this one having never played or even seen one. I bought it non working and got it working with little effort. The main square chip on the CPU was fried, and the DCS sound board was totally dead of sound. I replaced the sound board, and will attempt to learn more about the working of the board at a later date. There isn't much information available about the DCS technology.
The one thing that I noticed right off the start was the fact the rollover switches above the jet bumpers, were partially obstructed from view by the ramps. I then decided to drill 3 holes in the black back playfield wood and install 3 green lights there. Then the player can see which of the rollovers has already been lit. Quite a simple modification with great benefits to the player. See picture for a clear understanding of the mod. It is quite similar to the rollovers in Fish Tales now. I just have to find some dollar sign stickers to finish it off.
There is also suppose to be a single drop target installed on the game, but it is only available in prototypes. If anyone has some pictures or information, please send it to me...

Dirty Harry is a game that has a very easy learning curve. The shots are straight forward and easy to see. There is really 4 sections to the game: #1 Modes, #2 Magazine awards, #3 Rank/Safehouse awards, #4 Multiball.
The modes are ok, nothing to write home about, but still good. You shoot the sink hole on the left to start it, and either loop to relight it. After you have started, all 6 modes there is a "Crime Wave" mode (wizard mode) 4 ball mulitball, where lighting all 5 badges on the playfield capture a criminal. You are awarded with a name up on the dmd if you beat the previous criminals caught.
There is also a magazine award, 5 possibilites, which are won by hitting all 8 stand ups (bullets) then shooting the "Warehouse" to collect it. One thing that is of note here, one of the targets on the right is not able to be hit directly by a flipper shot. All 7 others are.
There is also a rank/safehouse award. By making the left ramp shot with the upper right flipper, you adavnce in rank from Rookie to Chief. Also, by adavncing in rank this lights the safehouse sinkhole to start or light different awards. I love making the left ramp shot, it is very satisfying.
Last but not least is multiball, it is 3 ball. To light it you must collect 5 badges on the playfield, by shooting ramps and sinkholes. Once multiball starts the jackpot is collected by shooting the right ramp and relit by shooting the warehouse. The left ramp is a super jackpot (double) and always remains lit. Jackpots are increased by shooting the safehouse.
Dirty Harry's toy in this game is a gun mounted on the right hand side of the playfield. The ball is loaded in the gun which then swivels and then is fired. The gun is only used in the skill shot (optional), to start multiball, or in Feel Lucky, which is lit by making right ramp shots and collected in the warehouse. There is only one problem with the gun, power. It is super powerful which is needed to make it up the left ramp, but it can break other plastics and targets.
Dirty Harry has lots of stuff to do. You can play for extended periods of time and only complete a few things. It is a good game for people that like to get some game time out of each ball they play. It ranks a 7 out of 10, simply because it cen get a little too easy.
