1995 Williams Congo

Let me just start out by saying I bought this game before I watched the movie. I am glad I didn't see the movie first, I would never have considered the game. It is a really cool game. Playfield is a little naked on the left hand side but the game play is solid. Game is in wonderful shape.
My brother did a great service to this game. He added a bunch of custom plastics. First off he made small square plastics to cover up the ugly exposed micro switches. He used images of the gray gorillas. Look at pictures to see before and after. He also added two in/outlane plastics. The game just came with steel in/outlane dividers. Now they have plastic on top with a jungle theme that fits the game perfectly. He also took the rectangular key chain plastic and attached to the side of the ramp over the volcano entrance. I also just got an NOS set of plastics for the game, so now it is even better! The game looks and plays fantastic!

Congo is a very straightforward game, nothing too spectacular and not too boring. Even though this is a 1995 game there is an absence of modes. You would think this would hurt the game but it is fine without them.
The game has a few objectives, #1 Gray attacks, #2 Mine Shaft, #3 Map awards, #4 Mystery/Video mode, #5 Amy and #6 Multiball.
The gray attack is started by making a turnaround just to the right of the left ramp 4 times spelling GRAY. This activates the under playfield gorilla. He acts as flippers and bats the ball towards the player. It is a similar set up to the cellar playfield in Haunted House. Use the flipper buttons to operate the gorilla and hit the 5 stand up targets, spelling Congo. Spell Congo in a specific amount of time and get an award.
The mineshaft is started by hitting an upper sinkhole using the upper left flipper. Once started, choose caves using flippers, get points or diamond awards by the paths taken. The path is random, and each time you choose successfully there is another cave choice. You start with 2 caves and max out at 5.
Map awards are collected by hitting the right sinkhole. The map is lit by making the left ramp 3 times to spell MAP. There are some great awards to be had here, most notably is Skill Fire and Jungle Jackpot. Skill fire, you get unlimited balls for a set time, to repeatedly make the skill shot with the manual plunger. The Jungle jackpot is a 2 ball multiball where you must make the right sinkhole to collect the jackpot.
The mystery award is collected from the centre sinkhole. You light this by spelling Zinj using the lane changes and the inlane / outlanes. The best award from this sinkhole is the Video mode. To light it, you need to hit set of three stands ups a total of 5 times. The video mode is hard, I always seem to crash early, and it takes a long time to light the mode to begin with. You steer a boat through rocks, and if you are lucky enough to make it to video mode again, the rocks are now hippos.
Amy is a gorilla in the upper left corner, she uses her arms as a ramp. Once you make the top rollovers this lights Amy. Start Amy by making the top sinkhole, shoot it 3 mores times in a set time limit, to get an award from Amy.
Multiball is made by locking three balls. To light the locks you must collect diamonds by making various shots on the playfield. The balls are then erupted from the volcano ramp in the upper right corner. To collect the jackpot, make the left ramp or right Volcano ramp.
The ultimate goal of Congo is to collect 100 diamonds. Once this is done, you start the wizard mode. The wizard mode is a 4 ball multiball plus the under playfield gorilla bats the ball too.
Congo is a very plain game that is extremely balanced. There isn't one thing you want to focus on every game. It just develops, what to shoot for. You just have to keep plotting along until you get the magical 100 diamonds. I would consider this game an 8 of 10.
