Atheroslcerosis
In the condition called atherosclerosis, plaques form on the arterial side of the vascular tree. This can occur in the carotid arteries in the neck. Massage over the anterior neck can cause the plaque to release into the circulation potentially causing a stroke.
Signs of atherosclerosis indicating insufficient blood flow to the
brain:
Lightheadedness
Nausea
Faintness
visual
blurring
dizziness
This condition is common in elderly clients and it is advised not to massage the anterior of the neck and only massage after consulting with a physician.
