Allergy
Symptoms/Skin Rashes
Massage techniques are contraindicated in areas over or near allergic skin lesions such as rashes, hives, psoriasis, eczema, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect or snake bites. Some reasons why they are contraindicated:
The
skin is very friable over lesions and can be easily disrupted, causing
bleeding.
Many
rashes can be spread through contact (i.e., poison oak) and others are
contagious.
Some
medications prescribed for rashes can suppress the general immunity of the
client and make them more susceptible to the infection. Client’s with
compromised immune systems should not be massaged if the practitioner has a
cold or any sort of infection that may be contracted (by the client).
