Take me back

"The devil's pixie tells me
things, when you're not with
me, I don't know who I am"

This song was written while I
was out on tour with Paula
Cole last year. Kevin Barry
(Paula's wonderful guitar player)
and I were playing
around with our guitars in the
dressing room
one night and
we banged out the chords. I
was driving around the
country in a rental car for that
whole tour, so the road
imagery came from that. The
song actually started as a
total road song with lots of
town names in it. I had lots of
cliche rock moments in my
head when a line would go
"chapel Hill..." and the kids
would go crazy. Luckily I gave
that theme up and let the
song developed into a song
about being physically distant
from someone and letting
yourself drift away from them
entirely-while still hoping that
they might do the same thing to
draw you back in. Waiting for
someone else to re-light the
fire doesn't usually work
though, does it? The devil's
pixie is a nickname I had for a
friend of mine on that tour
who kept telling me the truth
before I was willing to see it
