I have been known to make
songs up on stage in the
middle of shows. Sometimes
I'll take an audience
suggestion and improvise,
sometimes someone in the
audience will do something
that I just can't ignore.
One night when I was playing at
the Troubador in Los Angeles there
was a girl in the front row
cackling like a hyena, so I
started singing "Hyena girl..."
For some reason that image
stayed with me for days and I
knew it had to make it into a
proper song. Propeller Girl is
basically a study of that one
person who can come into
your life at any given time, no matter
how settled and comfortable
you think you are, and mess
everything up. Not necessarily
in a bad way, but everything
gets turned upside down
anyway, you know this person
isn't right for you, you know
you're over it you know you're
impervious to his or her
charms, but through the door
they come and BOOM, you're
gone, as with many of my
songs there are some true
elements and some fiction, the
names have been changed to
protect the guilty-usually me.
Oh, Adam Durtz came by and
sang some great backing vocals.
