Innocence
I wanted to be the air you
breathe then I watched you suffocate"
Innocence was the first song
I'd ever written with other
people. Writing this song was
a life-altering event for me, as
I was forced to share ideas
with other folks and to realize
that somethimes other people
can help form ideas that I
would leave half-realized. the
setting in which we wrote this
song wasn't exactly dull either.
I was lucky enough to go to a
castle in the south of France a
couple years ago to attend a
song writing gathering. There
were 27 of us there and each
day we wrote with two of three
other people. We had the
morning to write a song and
then three hours in the studio
later in the day to do a demo. I
wrote this song with Paul
Thorn (an amazing singer and
boxer form Topelo,
Mississippi). Billy Falcon
(an artist and writer from Nashville),
and Kevin Savigar ( a long-time Rod Stewart
collaborator and an amazing pianist).
It was such an
amazing few hours giving birth
to this little gem of a song. It's
one of my favorites. It's about
wanting desperately to be
perfect for someone but
knowing that you're wrong for
each other. even if you were
right once, there's been too
much damage done, too many
words spoken in anger to ever
see each other as you once
did. we had a great time
recording this with a 16 piece
orchesta ans a ten vioce
choir. Kudos to Andrew
Williams for bringing this song
alive. Oh, I also wrote a song
with Jon Bon Jovi that same
week that's on the newest Bon Jovi record.
It's called "she's a mystery",
but that's a totally different story
