MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin senior guard Kirk Penney was named to the Wooden Award Preseason All-American Team, the Los Angeles athletic Club announced today. A total of 50 players were chosen, based on last year’s individual performance and team records.

Penney was a first-team All-Big Ten selection last year as he led the Badgers to a shared of the Big Ten Conference regular season title. His 15.1 paced the squad as he scored in double figures 23 times. He was named Big Ten Player of the Week three times, tying Indiana’s Jared Jeffries for the most weekly honors. Penney, a native of New Zealand, represented his country in the 2000 Olympics and will do so again at the upcoming World Basketball Championships.

Penney was one of five Big Ten players named to the team. The others were Brian Cook of Illinois, Tom Coverdale of Indiana, Purdue’s Willie Deane and Chris Hill of Michigan State. This is the second time in three years Wisconsin has had a player named to the Wooden preseason team. Mike Kelley was one of the 50 players chosen prior to the 2000-01 season.

The Wooden Award is presented on Sunday, April 13 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
