ROSS CROSLEY & ELIZA CLARK
Ross Crosley was born in 1808 in Hamilton Co., Ohio near Cincinnati, Ohio to William and Phebe
Crosley. In 1829 the Cincinnati Directory shows Ross working as a bricklayer, boarding at Levi
Darby’s. Levi was married to Sarah Crosley, who was Ross’ sister. In the 1829 Cincinnati Directory,
William Crosley was working as a blacksmith, boarding at Levi Darby’s. William is probably Ross’
brother. In the early 1830's Ross moved to Rising Sun, Dearborn Co., Indiana where he worked as a
bricklayer and farmed.
Eliza Clark was born in 1818 in Dearborn Co., Indiana to Nathaniel and Mary Clark. Here
Ross and Eliza met and were married August 3, 1834. Their license is recorded in Lawrenceburg
County Court House in Dearborn Co., Indiana. In the mid 1840's Dearborn County was split and Rising
Sun became part of Ohio County. Ross and Eliza belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Rising
Sun, where Ross was a steward.
On October 1, 1834, Ross Crosley and Lawrence Clark, his brother-in-law, bought land in
Rising Sun for one-hundred dollars form Ezra and Hulda Slauson. On December 20, 1835, Ross and Eliza
Crosley sold lot # 105 in Rising Sun to John Daniels for two-hundred dollars. In 1838 Ross sold land
to John James, deceased, in Rising Sun. On November 1, 1838 Ross bought lot # 97 in Rising Sun from
John James, deceased. In April of 1846 Ross purchased property from the estate of his father-in-law,
Nathaniel Clark, in Randolph Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana for $583.69
In about 1852 the family moved to Washington Twp., Lee Co., Iowa. The 1860 census shows Ross
working as a bricklayer. The 1868 Ft. Madison Directory in Lee County, shows him as a farmer in
Jefferson Twp. Ross bought ten acres of land in Township 68, three miles south of West Point, Lee
Co., Iowa, on June 3, 1864. He sold the land to William Pitman for one-hundred dollars on November
26, 1864. The transactions are recorded in the Ft. Madison Court House.
Ross and Eliza died by January 1869. Guardianship of their youngest children, Benjamin D.
and Florence, went to their brother, George, according to Ft. Madison court records dated January 25,
1869. Benjamin D. lived with Sarah Crosley Darby Davis, sister of Ross and widow of Levi Darby, in
West Point, Lee Co., Iowa until grown. Florence lived with her sister, Eliza Crosley Cooper until
she married in 1881.
Ross and Eliza’s three sons, Lawrence, George B., and James Ross served in the Civil War.
Lawrence and George B. served with Company G, 4th Regiment, Calvary, Iowa Volunteers. They enlisted
together on October 4, 1861. George was promoted to Teamster Wagoner. He was mustered out August 8,
1865 in Atlanta, Georgia. Lawrence Crosley was mustered out December 4, 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee.
James Ross Crosley enlisted August 11, 1862 with Company E, 19th Iowa Infantry, Volunteers. He was
taken prisoner September 29, 1863 near Morganza, Louisiana and imprisoned at Shreveport, Louisiana.
On July 22, 1864, James Ross Crosley was paroled in an exchange at Red River Lodge, Louisiana. On July
22, 1865, he was mustered out at Mobile, Alabama.

CHURCHES
The Methodist Church of Rising Sun - In the summer of 1815, the first sermon by the Methodist
minister, was preached by John Strange. He was the preacher on what was then called the Lawrenceburg
Circuit, which embraced a part of two and three counties and consequently extended far below Rising
Sun. Brother Strange received his invitation to preach at this new settlement on this wise. A Mrs.
Decoursey, who was the first Methodist who had moved to town, and another lady walked from Rising Sun
to a distance twelve miles below here, where Brother Strange had an appointment to preach, to hear him
and to invite him to come and preach a sermon for them in Rising Sun. He accepted the invitation, and
accordingly on his next round, he did so. The sermon was preached on the bank of the river, at a point
about the foot of Main Street. The pulpit was the trunk of a fallen tree. The pews were the tops of
trees which had been felled for the purpose of erecting cabins for the occupancy of the inhabitants.
This was the earliest beginning of Methodism in Rising Sun. From this, the appointment was continued
and the next fall at Conference, Rising Sun, was returned on the plan of the Circuit as a preaching place.
The first house occupied as a church or a preaching place, was the bar room of C. A. Craft, who had
settled here, and opened a house of public entertainment. His generosity extended to the religious
public as well and opened his bar room for public preaching. This home is still standing. The following
year, 1816, the first Methodist Episcopal Church, or class, was organized by Rev. David Sharpe, successor
to Mr. Strange. This class was composed of the following persons, viz: Elizabeth Craft, John Gordon, Nancy
Gordon, Henry Hayman, Elizabeth Howlet, Jane Fulton, Azariah Oldham, Rachel Oldham., and Elizabeth
Decoursey; with Azariah Oldham as class leader. The place where this claim was formed, and where it then
met, was in a log-schoolhouse, which stood on the north corner of Main and High Streets. The first
quarterly meeting ever held in Rising Sun, was 1818, by Rev. Moses Crume, as presiding elder. In 1818, a
lot was secured on which to build a church, and the house was completed in 1821. This lot was the same lot
upon which the present edifice stands. This lot was first deeded to the following persons, as board of
trustees: James Jones, Robert Hewitt, Moses Tapley, James Jones, Sr., Azariah Oldham, Gilbert Hall and
John Horrel. This church was built of brick and was 30 x 40 feet. It was enclosed and occupied for years
before it was plastered. It was “pewed” in the following novel way: It was proposed that each male member
make and bring to the church, one, two or more seats as donation; this was agreed upon. The seats were
accordingly made and brought; but being made of the kind and lumber each brother chanced to have on hand,
and in the style and dimensions, etc., according to mechanical skill and taste of each, “variety” was the
spice of the occasion. The first Sabbath-school was organized in 1826, of which James Jones, who now
occupied a local relation, was superintendent. Rising Sun Circuit was forced in 1837, with F. C. Holliday
as preacher in charge. In 1838 the first church edifice was found to be inadequate to accommodate the
congregation, and was accordingly taken down, and the second church was erected on the same ground. It
was also built of brick, 40 x 60 feet, with the basement containing class rooms, and a lecture room. The
audience room was above, comfortably seated and furnished. The building was ornamented with a spire and
furnished with a bell. Rising Sun was made a station, or became a self-sustaining church, supporting
entirely its own pastor in 1842, with J. M.
Sullivan as its pastor. The following persons were the stewards and leaders and composed the first
quarterly conference: Stewards-R. Crosley, J. M. Jennings, William E. Hoole, William Elliot, Benjamin
Morgan, William Scott and John H. Jones. Leaders-James Mapes, John H. Jones, Theophilus Jones, Thomas Jones,
John L. Morgan, George G. Brown and William B. Sink. The membership of the church at this time numbered
about 150.

When in the deepening flood I sink; when friends stand weeping on the brink,
I’ll mingle with my last farewell, thy lovely name Immanuel.
When tears are banished from mine eyes, when fairer worlds than these are nigh,
When heaven shall fill my ravished sight, when I shall bathe in sweet delight,

Charles Rust Ends Own Life With Shotgun
Worry over ill health and inability to find employment is believed to have caused Charles A. Rust, 56, who
roomed with his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. David Wristen, 2141\2 Jersey St., to commit suicide by shooting himself
in the left chest with a double barreled shotgun, Tuesday morning.
The body was found behind a shed in the rear of the house at 8:15. Coroner Eugene Johnston estimated that Rust
had been dead four hours or longer. No one could be found who heard a shot. Wind that roared and howled over the bluff
on which the house stands would have drowned out, the report, it is stated.
Rust apparently used a piece of bark 14 inches long and 3 inches wide to push the trigger of the gun. The gun was
found a foot or two away from the body and the bark was clutched in Rust’s right hand. He had suffered for years with
cancer of the face and had worried because he could not find work. Coroner Johnston, who will conduct an inquest in the
Blickhan funeral home, Tuesday at 7 o’clock, found witnesses who said they had heard Rust threaten to kill himself.

Friday Afternoon-Lived near Sawyer This County
Orville Buck, a fifteen year old lad from near Sawyer, was drowned in the waters of the Mississippi river in the
front of Fort Madison near Benbow’s ice houses Friday afternoon. He had frequented the city lately, coming in during the
afternoons purposely to enjoy a few hours in the water with the boys who gathered near the ice houses every day. Between
2:00 and 3:00 o’clock, after he had been paddling about for a short time, not being able to swim, he ventured a trifle
further than he had before and went under.
At the point where he went under was not over fifteen feet from shore. As soon as he was not seen by some of the
other boys in the water, Clem Bergthold went at once to rescue and was joined as soon as the word was reached them by
others who happened to be in the vicinity. One of those present stated he was positive it was not over seven minutes
after the boy went down that Mr. Young brought the body to the surface from the deepened hole. The still form was carried
to high ground and those who had been diving with E. C. Benbow and E.J. Baumert began first aid means of recitation,
while others phoned for physicians and the pulmotor. Dr. J.H. Walker and Capt. Hart of the fire department operated
the lung motor and every known means to restore a spark of life was put to use for two hours, all to no avail. The young
man was an adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. James Buck of near Sawyer.
