ROSS & SARAH CROSLEY
The first knowledge of Ross is from tax records dated 1781 from Green Twp., Washington Co.,
Penn. It shows Roos Crossley owning 60 acres of land, 2 horses, 3 cattle with a value of $34.
He is next listed on Moses Lambert's will, also in Washington Co. Pa., February 27, 1782. Mr.
Lambert shows a wife, Osee. Ross is listed as a trusted friend and brother. It is possible
that Ross is probably a brother-in-law of Moses. From the book titled, The Tenmile Country
and Its Pioneer Families, it was stated that Moses Lambert served in the Revolution. The
author stated that Moses possibly served with Captain John Houston's Co. of Washington Co.
Militia, first Batt. and he was with Crawfords Expedition. It is possible that Ross was also
with that company. Mr. Lambert lived near Garards Fort.
Ross was a member of the Goshen Baptist church. Other members of the church were Sarah and
Mary Crosley, and Mr. Lambert. The church was located in Washington Co., Pa.
Ross is listed again in 1784 and 1785 on the tax list from Green Twp., Washington Co., Penn.
Green Twp. is on the Monongahela River. There were few roads in those days, so it is our
estimation that Ross, along with his family built a raft. With all of their belongings, they
floated down the Monongahela River to the small town of Pittsburgh. At that time Pittsburgh's
population was approximately 1200 residents.
At Pittsburgh Ross and his family floated into the large Ohio River. The next documents dated
1790 show Ross in the new town of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. Ohio. Prior to finding Ross, there
is documentation of Able Crosley ,also in Cincinnati, in an 1782 census, showing 6 people
living with him. It is not known how, if at all, Ross and Able are related.
In 1791 Ross belonged to the Clough Baptist Church, in Hamilton Co. Ohio. Church records show
Ross was appointed deacon to assist Ferris, pastor of the church. Also in 1791 church records
mention Mrs. Ross Crosley.
We next find Ross listed in a pioneer newspaper on July 13, 1803, stating; "Ross Crosley,
living on the headwaters of Mill Creek five miles from Cincinnati, reports finding a strayed
mare."
In October of 1817, the Western Spy Newspaper of Cincinnati states the following;
ABSCONDED
From the subscriber on the 4th inst. Samuel Bennet, an indented apprentice. He is between 18
or 19 years of age. I will give 50 cents reward to the person who will return him without
charges. All persons are forewarned not to harbor him. ROSS CROSLEY Columbia township,
Oct 8, 1817.
In the same newspaper dated Friday, Dec. 19, 1817, is following article:
"Notice is hereby given, To all persons having just and legal claims against the estate of
ROSS CROSLEY, late of Hamilton county, Columbia township, deceased, that they are hereby
notified to exhibit their claims legally proven for adjustment, within 1 year from the date
hereof and all those that are indebted to said estate are requested to make immediate payment
to: SARAH CROSLEY
JAMES LYON, Executors, December 8th, 1817."
In 1794 we find the first mention of Henry Crosley, also in Hamilton Co, Ohio. We again find
him as a carpenter in Newton Twp, Hamilton Co.
In 1817 we find Ross Crosley's will. It mentions his brother Henry, his wife, Sarah; sons,
William, Joseph and Robert; and daughters, Mary Hurley, Rachael Stites, Elizabeth Goe and
Sarah Crosely (his youngest).
Ross Crossby, private, was found on a list for revolutionary soldiers on page 396 in the
Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Volume Four. It is in the Washington Co. Militia,
Continental Line for Depreciation Pay. It was for soldiers who received depreciation as per
cancelled certificates on file in Division of Public records at the Pennsylvania State Library.
It must be stated that his name is not found in any other revolutionary records. There are
not any completed records for the Washington Co. area. It was noted by historians that there
are many missing records for that area.

MOSES LAMBERT
Goshen Baptist Church Book notes that on the last Saturday of 1781, Moses Lambert was
received into the church by baptism. He had settled on a tract of land late patented to
his sons, Moses Jr., and Josias Lambert, situated close to Garards Fort. It is probable that
Moses Lambert was a member of Captain John Houston’s Company of Washington County Militia,
though no record of this company is found. It seems likely that when Moses Lambert was
baptized into Goshen Baptist Church that it was at this time he was expecting death as his
will was probated in Washington County on April 3, 1782 and is found in Will Book 1, page 9.
In his will, he mentions his brother (in-law?), Ross Crosley and disposes of a legacy to
John Martin’s wife, according to father’s will indicating that John Martin had married his
sister, and possibly Ross Crosley other sister. Moses Lambert mentions his wife, Ocie, two
sons, Moses, the youngest and Josias the eldest and three unnamed daughters.

Be it remembered that on the day and year aforesaid, the will and testament of Rofs Crosley
late, of this county, deceased, was this day duly presented to the court for probate and
record, clothed in the words and figures following to wit:
In the name of God, Amen, I, Rofs Crosley of Hamilton County and state of Ohio, being weak in
bodily strength, but perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God for calling onto mind
the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men at die, do make and
ordain this my last will and testament.
That is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of
the almighty God, that gave it and my body, I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent
Christian like manner, nothing doubting, but at the general resurrection, I shall receive
the same again by the almighty power of God and astonishing such worldly estate wherewith
it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give, demise and dispose of the same in the
following manner and form:
First, after my just debts and funeral charges are paid, I give and bequeath onto my well
beloved wife, Sarah Crosley, the use of the mansion house and the use of one-third of all my
real estate and all my personal estate, after the legacies are paid out, during her natural
life.
Second, I give and bequeath unto my youngest daughter, Sarah Crosley a good bed, and bedding
cow and calf and other household furniture amounting to one-hundred dollars, to be paid in the
six months after my decease.
Third, I give and bequeath to my brother, Henry Crosley, one-hundred dollars to be paid to
him as my executors think he needs it and all the remaining part of my personal estate after
the death of my wife, Sarah Crosley, to be equally divided amongst my four daughters; Mary
Hurley, Rachel Stites, Elizabeth Goe and Sarah Crosley.
Fourth, I will and bequeath onto my three sons; William Crosley, Joseph Crosley and Robert
Crosley, the use of the other two-thirds of my real estate. It is to be understood and my
wish that after my decease, the widow may have her one-third laid of so that my three sons,
above mentioned, may have liberty to sell, rent, so they shall think proper and after the
death of the widow, the third that she held be equally divided amongst my three sons, above
mentioned.
I hereby constitute and make my wife, Sarah Crosley, executrix and James Lyons, executor of
this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly discord, revoke, and disannul all
other former testaments, wills, legacies, bequeaths and executors by me in any way before
named, willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will
and testament. Witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this the sixteenth day of
September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen. Ross Crosley
