Medications

WARNING ~ PLEASE READ

This page isn't set up to try and tell you the medications that you should take etc, it is here only to share with you other medications that people with an M.H.I. are or have taken in the past and their experiences with them. This is not for any reason saying that you should be on them.

Depending on your illness and the severity of it, your doctor will prescribe medication to help you recover. It is the uptmost importance that any medications that your doctor prescribes to you, that you take exactly as he/she has instructed and even if you are feeling better and fine, KEEP TAKING THEM REGARDLESS, UNLESS YOUR DOCTOR STATES OTHERWISE. This is extremely important in your healing progress.

We understand that there are many questions that people ask in regards to medications, and the only person who can answer them safely and appropriately is your Doctor or Pharmacist. This site cannot do that for you, these are some medications that we have used or are using and our personal experiences with them. Because a particular medication may work well for me, it doesn't mean it will work for you. Just like a particular medication may not be working for me, doesn't mean that it won't work for you. Every person is different and every medication works differently for each person. So please keep this in mind.

When your doctor decides that he/she is going to give you medication to help your illness there are some useful questions to ask them before leaving the office, you may like to make a list first so that you remember to ask all of them and not forget any.

1) Is the medication addictive?
2) Does the medication make you drowsy?
3) What side effects are there?
4) Are they dangerous in pregnancy or breast feeding?
5) Are they safe to take with other medications?
6) Can they be taken with vitamin supplements?
7) How does the medication work to make me better?

They are just some of the questions that I ask my doctor when taking medication for my illness, you may have other questions also of relevance to your particular lifestyle and needs. But be sure to talk to your doctor about your medication and if you experience side effects, go straight back to your doctor or the emergency department of your hospital. DON'T EVER SHARE YOUR MEDICATION WITH ANYONE ELSE!!

A few interesting things that I learnt from my Psychiatrist may be of interest to you, well you may already know about them, but anyway I'll put here as I feel it is important to know whilst taking medications.

ALCOHOLmay cause dangerous side effects with some medications so don't drink whilst on medications. The other thing about alcohol is that it is a depressant itself, and if taken with anti-depressant medication can either neutralise the medication or reverse it, therefore throwing you into a deeper depression or your medications not working for several days!

CODINE can also affect the way that your anti-depressant medication works for you in a similar way to alcohol, so it is very important to ask your doctor for codine free pain relief medication and check the ingredients of anything you buy over the counter for codine. This my psychiatrist couldn't stress enough the importance of, and since I have been on codine free pain relief my medications have improved greatly for me, now I understand.

I was on Zoloft for quite a while about 12 months and kept relapsing on it, so unfortunately it didn't work for me, but I have friends who say it is great for them. I didn't experience any side effects whilst on it, and it isn't addictive either.

I am now currently on Cipramil and Largactil, the combination of these two medications work well for me and I have found the true meaning of life again. I haven't experienced any side effects from either medication which is great and both of them are not addictive (I refuse to take any addictive medication). The Largactil's main side effect is that it makes you sensitive to the sun, and this is the only effect that I have from it, so all I do is Slip, Slop & Slap, and keep out of the sun on hot days.

If you would like to share your medication experiences with us all, please email to Cherie on the "Your Say" page.
