Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity was founded at Boston University in 1909, it currently has over 210 Chapters and Colonies in the US and Canada and over 235,000 initiated brothers. The local chapter at Shippensburg University is the Phi Tau Zeta chapter, and was chartered in April 1982 and has over 350 initiated members. The chapter has won a variety of academic, service and athletic awards over the years, and is most proud of the Two Grand High Alpha awards that it has won for being one of the best Lambda Chi Alpha Chapters in North America.
The Fraternity has a strong social calendar for members, which include parties with both Greeks and non-Greeks, mixers with sports teams and sororities, date parties and an annual formal-, which went to Philadelphia in 2000. Community Service is also a strong point of the chapter. With activities such as Adopt a Highway and a Haunted house for area children Lambda Chi Alpha is one of the top fraternities for total hours of community service at the college. The fraternity also has had a risk management program in place since 1991, and always makes safety a top concern for brothers and non-brothers alike. New members can expect an excellent Fraternal education program during the association period where “associates” learn what the bond of Lambda Chi Alpha is about, both locally and nationally.
Lambda Chi Alpha’s local chapter is backed by a strong alumni group, which secured the Fraternity a new housing complex on Shippensburg’s off campus “Greek Row” in 1999. The housing corporation provides brothers with an affordable way to live in one of nicest off campus living arrangements available to Shippensburg students. The alumni also sponsor several annual events during the year which is highlighted by such events as the annual Golf Outing held at the Cumberland Golf Course every Fall and our annual Homecoming Tent and Bash. The alumni group also makes chapter publications and newsletters as well as maintains the fraternity website (www.phitauzeta.org)
The Shippensburg chapter is proud of it’s strong brotherhood and rich heritage and tradition and invites all non-Greek men to come out to see what Lambda Chi Alpha is all about. 2002 marks the 20th anniversary of the chapter at Shippensburg, and we look forward to many great years to come.
