UPDATE! (June 19, 2004)

Happy almost Father's Day! But that's off the topic. Last week, Wicked had its highest grossing week EVER, with a whopping $1,270,693 (this was probably helped along by the addition of a ninth performance that week, to make up for the deficiency of only seven during Tony week). Consequently, Wicked was at the top of the pack, gross-wise. In attendance, Wicked continued its streak of 100% attendance, still behind only The Lion King. Congrats to Wicked, and also check out the article: Article. Finally, finally, FINALLY, both the sheet music and karaoke CD for Wicked are being released! Thank Goodness (yes, you can laugh now; that was a joke)! There are two different sets of sheet music available: The Vocal selections, which has the vocal line with melody and lyrics, and the piano accompaniment as played by Stephen Schwartz himself/the show orchestra (the melody is NOT part of the accompaniment). The second book, the Piano/Vocal selections, is "slightly" easier (we don't know how different they are), has the vocal line and accompaniment as well, but the melody is written into the piano accompaniment, whereas in the other book it is not necessarily in the accompaniment. The Piano/Vocal Selections is longer because it takes up more space to write out; there is NO extra material. That was a very messy sentence; I'm very sorry. The Karaoke CD is being released by Pocket Songs, and it is the first of two CDs to be released. The second is by Stage Stars and it will be released soon, we hope (hopefully in July)! The first one (Pocket Songs) has only an instrumental background for you to sing to, whereas the second has a separate vocal track that has been pre-recorded as well as an instrumental track (so you can learn and practice with the singers and then do it yourself). The track list for both is as follows: "Dear Old Shiz", "The Wizard and I", "What Is This Feeling", "Dancing Through Life", "Popular", "I'm Not That Girl", "One Short Day", "A Sentimenal Man", "Defying Gravity", "Thank Goodness", "Wonderful", "I'm Not That Girl (reprise)", "As Long as You're Mine", "No Good Deed", and "For Good". Enjoy and go to our store on the site to order!

UPDATE! (June 11, 2004)

The replacement for Kristin Chenoweth has been announced! Jennifer Laura Thompson, a Tony nominee for Urinetown, will join the cast of Wicked as Galinda/Glinda starting July 20. Brava to her and break a leg once she starts performances! In other Wicked news, Christopher Fitzgerald, who plays Boq, will be taking some time off this coming month and next to perform at the Williamstown Theatre Festival from June 22-July 26. Replacing him for that time will be a star on the TV series "Queer As Folk" (HBO), Randy Harrison. This will be his Broadway debut. Congrats and break a leg! Here is the Jennifer Laura Thompson article: Article, and the Randy Harrison article: Article. Check it out!

UPDATE! (June 9, 2004)

There is a new webpage up on the net that is completely devoted to the wonderful Idina Menzel: Idina Menzel Website. It's great! Check it out!

UPDATE! (June 7, 2004) Wicked won 3 Tony Awards last night: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee), and Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty). For a complete list of winners go to the Winners List. On the official Tony Awards Website there are several clips of Idina. On the right hand side of the page her name will appear and you can watch an interview with Idina backstage. Really nice! On the left hand side there is a picture of her singing "Defying Gravity".

A picture of Idina with the Tony. We have also included her acceptance speech below for those who missed it:

"I am so proud to be in a musical that celebrates women, that celebrates their strengths and their differences, and to be in the company of these women this evening is a dream for me. Thank you so much. And Kristin Chenoweth, you are the grace and the light on that stage every night. This is something we built together and I love you. And Joe Mantello has had the faith in me for three and a half years and kicked my butt into this role. And Stephen Schwartz for writing the most beautiful music someone could sing eight times a week and Winnie Holzman for giving the green girl a heart. And the producers Mark Platt and David Stone and everyone and Tanya Travers, my voice teacher, and Heather Reynolds and Bonnie Bernstein and Joby Horrigan and Joe Dulude and Al Annotto get me in and out of this silly green makeup every night. And the cast, Joel Grey, Carole Shelley, Norbert Butz, the crew for getting me safe up and down and on the flying machine. And my mother, my father, my sister Cara and my grandmother are here tonight. Thank you for taking me to see Dreamgirls and Annie and everything growing up. And my beautiful, beautiful husband who tells me he loves me every time I feel like the biggest loser. I love you so much! Thank you everybody!" --

Idina Menzel, Best Actress in a Musical, Wicked

UPDATE! (June 3, 2004) GUESS WHAT? Amanda, another fan, found a website that has all of the lyrics to the Wicked songs. So for anyone who has ever wanted them check it out: Wicked LYRICS!!!. Thanks Amanda. Also, make sure to watch the 58th Annual Tony Awards this Sunday at 8:00 PM ET/PT on CBS. Go Wicked. There will be performances from many casts including Wicked, who will be peforming "Defying Gravity". Fun fact from tonyawards.com: Only two actors have won Tonys for performing in roles of the opposite sex: Mary Martin as the title character in Peter Pan (1955) and Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnbald in Hairspray (2003). By the way, Idina sang the National Anthem at the Yankee's game today. Bet she brought the house down! Did anyone see it?

UPDATE! (May 30, 2004)

Updating! Wow! What a concept! Wicked triumphed at the annual Broadway.com Audience Awards, winning Favorite New Broadway Musical, Favorite Leading Actress in a Broadway Musical (Idina Menzel), Favorite Onstage Pair (Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth), and Favorite Diva Performance (Idina Menzel....dang! Go Idina! She is en fuego!). Tonys are next Sunday! everybody watch and kep your fingers crossed for Wicked! More updating to come tomorrow....because I'm tired and methinks I should sleep.

Update! (May 24, 2004)

On May 20th Melissa Bell Chait went on for Kristin. At the last minute it was announced Melissa would be going on. I am assuming they didn't have enough time to call Laura Bell Bundy, the standby for Kristin. You go girl! Also, the official Wicked website is having trouble. Be patient!

Update! (May 24, 2004)

Broadway.com has pictures from Idina and Kristin's appearance at Sephora in Times Square. They are showing off the custom Wicked makeup. Did anyone get any of this stuff? I would be curious to know how it looks. Check out the pictures: Wicked Works It at Sephora.

Update! (May 23, 2004)

Check out this article that the New York Times wrote about Idina Menzel. On the right hand side of the screen there is a slide show about making Idina green each night. Really cool. I love her quote about how she sometimes feels beautiful and sometimes feels ugly in Elphaba's green. It really captures the character. The article is here: Green Day: A Witch's Transformation. I think it can only be viewed if you are signed up for the New York Times.

Update! (May 10, 2004)

Tony nominations are out (with a few surprises here and there)! Are you ready? Wicked garnered a whopping TEN nominations (yes, it's not the record, but oh well)! Here they are:

BEST MUSICAL

BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL, Winnie Holzman

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE WRITTEN FOR THE THEATRE, Stephen Schwartz

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, Kristin Chenoweth

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL, Idina Menzel

BEST SCENIC DESIGN, Eugene Lee

BEST COSTUME DESIGN, Susan Hilferty

BEST LIGHTING DESIGN, Kenneth Posner

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY, Wayne Cilento

BEST ORCHESTRATIONS, William David Brohn

Congrats to all! A couple surprises: Joe Mantello did not get a directing nomination! He already won an award for it (Outer Critics Circle)! Interesting. Also, many predicted that Joel Grey would get a featured Actor nomination. We weren't sure ow lucky that was, but it would have been great to see him get it. Personally, we were holding out for Carole Shelley or Michelle Federer (or both!) for Featured Actress! Oh well...

Update! (May 4, 2003)

Happy May (and almost Cinco de Mayo)! Actually, much has happened. The previously announced leaving dates of Joel Grey and Idina Menzel have changed. Though Kristin Chenoweth will still depart the show July 18, Joel and Idina will not leave until January 2, 2005. Bravo! More time to see them! Kristin's portrayal of Cunegonde in Candide (a concert version) with the New Yorkl Philharmonic runs May 5-8. Break a leg to her on this most challenging role. Wicked has started to garner well-deserved awards, but the biggest ones are yet to come. Tony nominations come out May 10. This year is going to be very interesting. Wicked will surely get many noms, but who knows what will happen at the actual ceremony? In other news, the current issue of Variety features an eighteen-page segment on Wicked - we got the magazine, and it is wonderful! There are lots of ads on the eighteen pages that someone could buy and write a message to cast or individual members (including one rather amusing ad from Carole Shelley to her castmates). Check it out! NPR (National Public Radio) will be broadcasting an interview with Stephen Schwartz on May 10. Here is the article: Playbill. Check it out! In recent Broadway Grosses, Wicked has consistently been at or near the top. Most recently, was second in gross (behind The Lion King) at a respectable $1,065,341. The show was also second in attendance at 100% behind the same. Kristin Chenoweth is having no trouble getting work beyond Wicked. Playbill reported her as being a likely choice for the upcoming "Pink Panther" film for MGM. here is the article: Here. Congrats! Both Idina Menzel and Kristin will take part in launching the new Wicked make-up line, sold exclusively at Sephora. The launch will take place May 21 at Sephora Times Square from 2-4 PM. Be there! There are two basic looks - the Glinda look and the Elphaba look (explained in greater detail here. Joel Grey recently (April 30) was a guest on the New York talk show "Theater Talk" - discussing his role in the show, the show itself, and his castmates. It may rerun, so keep an eye out for it. Wicked (back on the awards subjects) lead the excitement at the Drama Desk nominations with a whopping eleven nominations! More specifics to come later. Also, Wicked was the big winner at the Outer Critics Circle Awards, wioth four distinguished awards: Outstanding Broadway Musical, Outstanding Set Design (Eugene Lee), Outstanding Costume Design (Susan Hilferty), and Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Joe Mantello). Congratulations! Or should I say congratulotions? Sorry...I think that's all for today.

Update! (April 12, 2004)

I know - we're awful. We haven't updated. Augh. Frankly, not much has happened, though. The vocal selections come out May 3rd. Reserve yours today! (Through Amazon, etc. - the link is not yet up at the store). Happy belated birthday to Joel Grey, who celebrated with the cast yesterday afternoon, April 11th. Hey - we should all be so lucky as to have his gracefulness and presence at any age. Wicked is still knockin' 'em dead nightly - the grosses prove it. Most recently, the show had a gross of $1,101,014 (behind The Producers and The Lion King) and an attendance rate of 100% (behind the same two)! Bravo! Check back later!

Update! (March 25, 2004)

Kristin is supposedly featured in the current issue of Vogue. It is a fitness edition of the magazine. Check it out.

Update! (March 24, 2004)

Hello! Today I received an e-mail from a fan named Mark. Here is what he said:

Hey Guys...Did you know that Kristin has a great picture on page 38 of the Spring 2004 issue of SHOW PEOPLE...she is listed as one of the most alluring women of this season...it's a shame they didn't put Idina in it too...also on page 52, there is an article entitled "Witch Hunt"...It is an exclusive look at how the marketing team developed the poster for WICKED. They show five different versions of the poster and also 8 different fonts that were looked at. It also gives descriptions of why they didn't use them. Really neat!! Check it out...

We don't have a copy of the magazine, but I hope you enjoy it if you do. You can always check out showpeople.com and see if they have anything on the website. Thanks Mark. I know I am slow in responding to e-mails, (Sarah's bad)but please be patient.

Update! (March 18, 2004)

This is now officially the update-once-in-a-fortnight page! Oy vey. It's funny, though. I (Ben) am in Children of Eden right now, another Schwartz masterpiece, and you can totally hear Wicked starting to happen. It's quite exciting. Anywhom, Idina Menzel was on, I believe, a scheduled absence today (we're not sure the reason), and therefore missed her first show since previews started in October. Hey - one show out of 189? That ain't so bad. Kristin Chenoweth is now back in the show after further suffering from throat ailments. But she is fully healthy now. We wish her all the health in the world. She has sincerely written to fans apologizing for her absences. We know she hates having to call in sick. Congrats to Eden Espinoza, who, as aforementioned, went on as Elphaba for the first time today. We are sure that she was wonderful. Also, congrats to Laura Bell Bundy, who has been covering for Glinda on and off recently. Last week's Broadway grosses were up a while ago. Wicked is back at the top - well, almost. It was third in gross, with $1,064,717, behind The Producers and The Lion King. Although the show was at 100% attendance, it was still third (can you believe that?), behind the same shows. Here is the article: Broadway Grosses. Check it out! Two new things from Broadway.com today - legendary diva Liza Minelli (who made the character of Sally Bowles famous, darlings) visited "old chum" Joel Grey last week by seeing Wicked this week - and boy, did she love it! She even got up on stage and sang a few bars of "Wilkommen" with the Wonderful Wizard. Here are the photos: Article. Also, there is an extensive Stage Notes about Idina Menzel and her new CD, in particular. It's about halfway down the page, and is under the fittingly titled heading "Look a Look at Her Now" (which is, undoubtedly, a take on one of Idina's songs from The Wild Party called "Take a Look at Me Now"). Here is the article: Stage Notes. Check it out! Finally, the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids annual Easter Bonnet competition is raging between every show on Broadway right now, and Wicked is no exception. They need your help to raise the most money for BC/EFA - a wonderful cause. The competition runs until mid-April, when the winner is announced. So get out there, see the show, and buy those signed playbills like there's no tomorrow!

P.S. Did we ever mention that in November, when we saw Wicked last, Michelle Federer (Nessarose) told us that she had seen the site and loved it. We felt so loved. Have a nice day!

Update! (March 18, 2004) Wicked has announced a tour that is headed towards Toronto. Good news for all of you Canadians. Check out the article A hit show that's truly Wicked: Broadway blast to play Toronto.

Update! (March 11, 2004)Melissa Bell Chait recently suffered a minor stroke and ended up in the hospital. The article follows: Wicked's Melissa Bell Chait Out of Hospital. She is expected to return to the show in a few weeks. We wish her well. Tidbit: Idina Menzel has never missed a show in NY, and only one show in San Francisco. The one show she missed in San Francisco was before opening night so that she would be ready. NICE JOB! We appreciate every bit Idina. Has anyone gotten her CD yet? We haven't yet, but I have heard a few songs from my girlfriend and from Idina's site. I'm sure it's amazing. I (Sarah) am in Cabaret right now, and it is going very well. I am exhausted though.

Update! (March 10, 2004)

Thank you for not abandoning our site (if you haven't)! Sarah's show opens tomorrow and mine on Monday, so once we're in performances, our schedules won't be as hectic. Lots of news today. Newest Broadway Grosses are up: Broadway Grosses. Wicked dropped a bit this week, perhaps due to kristin Chenoweth's absence during the week (due to illness). Fortunately, cold season is ending. Wicked is third in gross, at $956,417 (behind The Producers and The Lion King). Wicked is fourth in attendance, at 92.9% (behind The Producers, Mamma Mia, and The Lion King). Check it out! Also, Kristin Chenoweth has been announced as the host for the 2004 Drama League Awards, to be held on May 14 at the Grand Hyatt in midtown - here is the full story: Playbill Article. In other Wicked-related news, Stephen Schwartz and the cast of Wicked will be signing Wicked CDs on March 12th at the new Borders bookstore at Columbus Circle in New York from 5-6 P.M. Gregory Maguire will also be autographing the special edition of the novel. The Wicked vocal selections are available for preorder, but we haven't got the link yet. More to come.

Update! (March 4, 2004)

Happy March! The latest Broadway grosses are up, and we are actually posting them! Wow! Wicked is once again third in gross ($1,010,324), behind The Producers and The Lion King. Wicked is second in attendance at 97.1%, behind The Producers. Check out the article: Playbill. A beautiful Elphaba bear has been designed for the annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS event "Broadway Bears" (not "Broadway Bares"; Elphaba is fully clothed). Here is the link; she is down at the bottom of the page. Elphaba Bear. More to come soon!

Update! (February 22, 2004)

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone! The latest Broadway grosses (week of February 9-15) were up a while ago. Wicked is once again over one million dollars, with a total gross of $1,001,323! This puts the show in third place in gross, behind (surprise, surpsrise) The Lion King and The Producers. In attendance, Wicked was at 96.2% (also third place, behind King Lear and The Producers). Check out the article: Broadway Grosses. There is also a rather amusing article up on Playbill about Joel Grey, Wicked's Wizard. A Wonder-Filled Wiz, the article, is at the link. On Tuesday, February 17th, the annual Broadway Festival was held, and Broadway.com was there! Among the cast members were Laura Bell Bundy and Eden Espinosa, the standbys for Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. They sang "For Good". The article is here: Broadway Festival 2004. Be sure to go through all the photos, because towards the end there is a good picture of them singing "For Good". If anyone out there knows of the publication called Zink magazine, there is reportedly a four page question and answer interview with Kristin Chenoweth. Check it out! Finally, there is a great article about Idina Menzel on Stage Line: Article. Check it out!

Update! (February 10, 2003) There is a Wicked the Musical trivia quiz that I (Sarah) found on google today. Check it out Wicked Quiz. Not too hard, but it's fun.

Update! (February 9, 2003)

Idina's six song CD "Here" will be available for purchase on Tuesday, February 10th! It will be available online soon and at the theatre in case you're planning on seeing WICKED in the near future.

The above update is brought to you thanks to the official site of Idina Menzel at idinamenzel.com. You can see the cover of the CD in the music section. If anyone finds out where the CD will be sold let me know-amazon doesn't even have it. We are going to check our local stores tomorrow. Also for any nail polish fans out there-OPI has launched a series called Holiday on Broadway. Buy it here. Sarah's girlfriend says that she has seen a Wicked themed one. It is green and has sparkles in it. Unfortunately, it isn't listed anywhere on the internet yet. Good luck in finding it!

Update! (February 6, 2004)

Idina Menzel finally answered those questions we all sent her. Are any of your questions up there? Here it is: Ask a Star: Idina Menzel. Also, our favorite leading ladies have new pictures up on Broadway.com. Apparently, the event took place in a special talkback session at Planet Hollywood today (February 6, 2004). David Stone, one of the producers, was also interviewed. There are pictures and more info at Wicked Witches Fly Into Winterfest Event.

Update! (February 1, 2004)

Check out this really awesome Idina Menzel fan site: IDINA MENZEL A new unoffical fan site About the fantastic woman of stage/screen. We are again finally posting week-old Broadway grosses, for the week of January 19-25. It was a very slow week, but Wicked was second in gross ($1,004,090 - behind The Producers) and also second in attendance (95.1% - also behind The Producers). Here is the article: Playbill Article. There is an old AP article on the special effects in Wicked - very cool: Article. The article is to the side of the picture. Wicked is taking part in a program in which several performances will be sign-language interpreted or open captioned. Wicked, doing the most of the group, will be doing four of these performances. BRAVO! Sarah is learning Sign Language, and Ben is trying, so this was exciting. Here is the article: Article. Finally, Kristin Chenoweth was out of Wicked last night (Saturday). Her standby, Laura Bell Bundy, went on for the first time as Galinda/Glinda. Congratulations to her! No official release of why Kristin was out has been posted, but we're sure she had a legitimate reason. We hope she is in the show today!

Update! (January 25, 2004)

Wicked reaches its 100th performance since opening night today. Congratulations (Or Congratulotions, if you're so inclined) to them all! We are finally posting wek-old Broadway grosses today. For the week of January 12-18, Wicked was 3rd in overall gross with $1,013,453. That is behind The Producers and The Lion King, respectively. Wicked was fourth in attendance rate, at 95.2%. That is behind The Producers, Henry IV, and Avenue Q, respectively. Here is the whole article: Broadway Grosses. Also, Wicked cast member Jan Neuberger (Midwife) will be performing her one woman show Boomer Girl: A One (Middle-Aged) Woman Show at Mama Rose's Cabaret in New York City. Check out the article at Playbill.com: Jan Nueberger Article.

Norbert Leo Butz is now back full time as Fiyero, though he filled in two surprise performances over the weekend. From January 19-February 1, Idina Menzel will be featured on "Radio Playbill": Article. There is a new article on Carole Shelley at playbill.com. The cool part is-she wrote it herself. Check it out: Lucky to Be Wicked.

Update! (January 14, 2004)

Really exciting new Press release today:

The original cast recording of the smash hit Broadway musical WICKED has just made Billboard's Top 200 Chart, landing at #187 with a bullet (the bullet indicates that the album is one of those with the greatest gains in sales) in last week's nationwide album sales. The chart will appear in this Friday's edition of Billboard. WICKED, produced for Decca Broadway by composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and released on December 16, will also be listed at #13 for album sales in New York, the number-one market in the country. WICKED will be the only Broadway recording appearing on the Billboard chart. WICKED has seen box office grosses of over 1 million dollars for each of the last seven weeks at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre (222 W. 51st St.). Richard Zoglin of Time Magazine recently proclaimed WICKED the #1 Musical of the Year. In addition to Time, WICKED and its stars were also featured on the year-end lists in the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, Time Out, the Star-Ledger, WOR Radio and the Advocate.

Congrats and here's to many more months! Happy new year again!

UPDATE! (December 30, 2003)

Encouraging new Broadway grosses are up at Playbill.com for the week of December 22-28! Nearly every show on Broadway did particularly well this week, and Wicked was right at the top. Again, Wicked topped the million-dollar mark this week, with a whopping $1,182,972. This was only second to The Lion King. (Darn Disney!) Although Wicked filled the Gershwin on average to 100% PERCENT CAPACITY this week (Bravo!), it was fourth in average capacity, behind Mamma Mia!, The Lion King, and Hairspray, respectively. The chart is here: Broadway Grosses. Check it out!

Update! (December 29, 2003)

There are two "Best of 2003" articles up at Broadway.com. Both mention Wicked (well, one mentions just the stars). That one is here: Best of 2003. The other one is here: Best of 2003 #2. Check them out! There is also a rather negative review of the Wicked CD up at Playbill.com: CD Review. There were two positive ones up recently Broadway.com that we should have linked (sorry), so we'll try to dig them up from archives.

New Update! (July 26, 2003) ACK! We have made a mistake. We found the little blurb about Julia Murney joining Wicked on Playbill Online, but the section of the article about Julia joining Wicked has just been removed. We assume it was a mistake or a rumor. Sorry for the confusion. Julia Murney, however did premiere the song "Defying Gravity" before Wicked came out. Check out an article about the New York production of wicked here. It talks about a few of the changes that will be made before Wicked opens in New York.

Above is something I found on a promotional handout. It seemed perfect for announcing Wicked's NY run! Sorry the colors are a bit off.

Wicked will prievew from October 7th till the opening. Wicked's official New York opening will be October 30th. That is the day before Halloween. It seemed very appropriate to us.

Above is a Wicked poster we found in Shubert Alley outside of the Shubert Theatre. We were so excited to see it being advertised. It's really coming-of course.

Wicked's San Francisco run ended on June 29th. For those Stephanie Block fans out there, she is leaving the cast to lead in her own show with Hugh Jackman. Nice job! If we find out who Elphaba's new understudy will be - we'll let you know.
