Tourist beaten, robbed after cricket match

 

A Danish tourist was robbed recently in broad daylight   British couple robbed

A British tourist was on Friday evening beaten and robbed after leaving the cricket match which was played at the National Stadium, Providence.

Visible marks of violence of his face.

According to reports, Bernard Melling, 55, of England, was attacked by the driver of the taxi he boarded to go back to a guest house in Middle Street where he is staying at. This occurred at around 18:30hours.

He was robbed of $30,000, US$50, a couple of credit cards and a digital camera after a beating. He had visible marks of violence of his face.

Melling told this newspaper that after the match he went to the first taxi in a line of cars.

According to him, he got in the passenger seat and told the driver to take him to the Middle Street guest house.

However, after driving for about five to ten minutes along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, the driver turned into a small street.

He added that the driver stopped the car and started hitting him and then somebody else got in the back of the car and started hitting him from behind.

“The next thing I remember is waking up lying in the middle of the road.”

Melling said that two people took him to the hospital before the ambulance could. He also went to the police station.

He added that he came to Guyana on January having seen a documentary on BBC about Guyana the previous summer.

“I have been traveling around South America for two months came back at the end of January.”

Deputy High Commissioner Simon Bond, said that the High Commission met with Melling.
