The Mutant Musical

A Once More, With Feeling Parody

by The Partyman

SITE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION - SCRIPT ONLINE SOON

Contained on this site is a parody I have written based on Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episode 6x07: Once More, With Feeling (Written by Joss Whedon). Aside from being a special 'musical' episode, it is one of the best 50 minutes of a television show I have seen in my life, and therefore fitting to be the subject of a tribute such as is found here.

I have a long and perhaps embarrassing history of being able to re-write songs with vaguely amusing lyrics, but was particularly inspired to approach Once More, With Feeling after several "Bronzers" at the Bronze Beta posting board posted some parodies based on Joss's lyrics. Once I had completed two or three songs, I found myself somehow compelled to 'write' an entire script: The Mutant Musical.

As fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer currently find ourselves in what is affectionately known as "re-run Hell" while we wait for new episodes, I have re-written Joss's original episode as a light-hearted look at the varied opinions of the shows huge online fanbase during this awkward time in an unusual Season.

The Sixth Season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer has seen a change in some of the shows established dynamics. There are less Vampires being slayed, and the challenges faced by the core characters are more internalised and personal. There is no singular "Big Bad" Villian for Buffy to fight.

The change in style and pace has divided fans and provoked mixed reactions, from those who appreciate the challenge of "growing up' with the characters and the darker tone, to those who disapprove of the increased sex and violence and bemoan the lack of a coherent story arc.

Certainly the last few months on The Bronze Beta has seen many fascinating and often heated discussions about the style of this season, the apparent dis-jointedness of the writing and, of course, whether or not Spike is Evil…

Personally I have thoroughly enjoyed this Sixth Season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The decision to take the core characters down dark paths seems to me to be a logical step after the character building of the previous Five Years. It has been time for our gang to take a good look at themselves and attempt to deal with their fears and insecurities, which when orchestrated by a team of writers that really know their characters, can be just as effective as any Demon or Vampire adversary.

The Songs and Scenes of The Mutant Musical showcase several areas of discussion, disdain, and delight that have been apparent in the online fan community this Season. I hope you enjoy it!

This introduction may change a little (or a lot) once I have got the Script online and the site is fully operational, as I will likely feel it is too much word-age for people to get through on their way to the Songs and the Script. Bearing in mind that the Script has its own introduction on the menu page, It is likely that the text here will be edited down at some point. Actually I just read it back and it's very long, isn't it! I hope to add a guest-book at some point but I've been unwell recently.

Disclaimer: It would be very cheeky of me to attempt to claim that any similarities between characters and any real persons either living or dead is purely co-incidental, so I shan't even try. The material here is parody, and is not intended to infringe, insult, represent or misrepresent in any way, shape or form.
