MT. ARARAT HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS GILBERT & SULLIVAN’S “THE GONDOLIERS”

Picture Venice during the Renaissance: the ducal palace, dashing gondoliers, lively peasant girls, Spanish royalty and the looming presence of Don Alhambra, the Grand Inquisitor.

Merrymeeting Community Players present “THE GONDOLIERS,” against a beautiful John Singer Sargent backdrop painted by Helen Watts of Bowdoin assisted by Frances Pratt Caswell. For fans of Gilbert & Sullivan, “The Gondoliers” is rich with Gilbertian twists of romance, intrigue, a stolen prince, foolish noblemen, unpermitted romance and liberal jabbing at all classes of society. “The Gondoliers” also embodies some of the most beautiful music Sir Arthur Sullivan composed delivered by accomplished soloists, ensembles and a chorus of both contadine and gondoliers.

Under the artistic direction of Lennie Eichman, also costume designer, the music direction of Diane Sturgis, choreographer Elaine Perry of Brunswick, set designer Henry Eichman and a small orchestra organized by Kathi Downing of St. John’s School and Phippsburg School, this production promises to warm and delight the audience.

Performers include Catie Moore of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, flute; Kathi Downing, trumpet & percussion; Brad Howard of Farmingdale, veteran of several MCP shows, piano, Michelle Tondreau of Freeport and Helen Harper of Farmingdale, clarinet.

The cast of leads include Rick Holman, Mt. Ararat ‘96 , Jan Crosson, Andy Scherzer and Rachel Prescott of Topsham , Rachael Roberts and Meg Owen of Brunswick , Brett Burnham of Bath , Connor Carew of Freeport and Alex Davis of Norway. Choral members include , Sarah Mason and Heather Doris of Brunswick, Henry and Lennie Eichman of Topsham, Helen Watts and Dustin Draper of Bowdoin, Adam McFarland of Bowdoinham, Mary Hillery of Arrowsic, Pam and Leah Tondreau of Freeport, Emily Edmondson of Winthrop, Deb Howard of Farmingdale, Jen Wendell of South Paris, Jenn Carter of Harrison, and Ed Sargent of Gardiner.
