Original Casting

In Fonda's first movie, The Farmer Takes a Wife, in which he created the role on Broadway was originally intended for Gary Cooper or Joel McCrea.

Henry Fonda was considered for a role in the movie The Bicycle Thief. Selznik rejected the idea since he didn't think Fonda was "box office" enough.

Henry Fonda and Bette Davis were considered for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? But after Elizabeth Taylor expressed interest to play the lead with his then husband Richard Burton, the project obviously went to the them. Fonda in his autobiography expressed how much he wished he was in that movie.
