  Biography

I have established an international profile as a soloist, recording artist and clinician. I specialises in contemporary repertoire and have been at the forefront of generating new works for her instrument by British composers for the last 15 years. During this period I have commissioned and given the premiere of over 25 solo works for clarinet, the majority of which have now been released on CD.

My catalogue of 7 CD releases to date culminates in a pivotal recording of 5 new concertos for clarinet and concert band with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, conducted by James Gourlay and Guy Woolfenden (Polyphonic). The programme for this recording features important new commissions from Nigel Clarke, Martin Ellerby, Kit Turnbull, Guy Woolfenden and Malcolm Arnold (arr. Woolfenden.

In 2003 I will record a further 3 CDs featuring new concertos written for her by leading British composers. My pioneering work with clarinet and electronics has led to two CDs for this medium, entitled New York Counterpoint and The Hemlock Stone respectively, with a recording of Vaggione¹s Phases with the pianist Philip Mead scheduled for late 2002 (INA, Paris). My chamber music catalogue includes a premiere recording of the late Wilfred Joseph¹s Clarinet Quintet with the Kreutzer Quartet (Metier), accompanied by his two clarinet sonatas, two CDs of British and French repertoire with my pianist Benjamin Frith and a recent recording of works for two clarinets with Stefan Harg.

I have broadcast as a solo artist for BBC Radio 3, Radio France, DRS1 (Switzerland) and RTE and performed as a concerto soloist in Germany, the Middle East, America, France and Switzerland and across the UK. I have also given performances with electronics in Paris, Belgium and Belfast, with engagements scheduled in Stockholm, America and Australia in 2002/3. I am a founder member of the contemporary music ensemble Sounds Positive and with them has premiered over 70 new works by British composers during the last 14 years. The ensemble has released a CD of chamber music by John Lambert (NMC), presents regular concert series¹ in London, undertakes collaborative work with dance companies and is a familiar participant at contemporary music festivals across the UK and abroad. I am Head of Professional Performance Studies and Senior Tutor in Clarinet at the Royal Northern College of Music and the UK representative for Howarth Clarinets.
