According to the latest Malibooz newsletter, Walter Egan's "Hot Summer Nights" (featured on his 1978 album Not Shy as well as the Malibooz's Malibooz Rule!) was the basis for Eminem's new single "We Made You." The influence of "Hot Summer Nights" is so strong that Eminem and Dr. Dre are sharing co-writing credit of “We Made You” with Walter Egan.

"We Made You" is the first single from Eminem's upcoming album Relapse which will be released on May 19th. The single entered the iTunes charts this week at #1.

April 7, 2009

According to John Zambetti, The Malibooz are in pre-production on a new album, which will be British Invasion style. The album will feature backing vocals from the Quarry Men and John says he's hoping to get Donovan to do the same. I'm looking forward to hearing to this one!

I want to start this entry off by apologising for my utter neglect of this site over the last two months. Apparently I completely missed the news about Walter's February 11 art exhibit at Georgetown U. Hopefully you caught the news in time by perusing WalterEgan.net, the official Walter Egan site.

Happily, I have not missed the news about his concert on at McNeir Hall (Georgetown Campus) on April 4th. The concert begins at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Terrible news to report - songwriting legend (and one of my personal favorite musicians) John Stewart has died at the age of 68 after suffering a massive stroke or brain aneurysm. Stewart was best known as a member of the folk group The Kingston Trio, but had carried on a long and prolific solo career in the years since and was influential to many artists, including Walter Egan and Lindsey Buckingham.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, it's been over a week since WalterEgan.net announced these dates. I've been busy, so sue me!)

January 13, 2007

I've finally managed to find an actual date for the release of Burrito Deluxe's long awaited Disciples of Truth - February 27, 2007. That's right, FEBRUARY. We get to wait another month (because we obviously haven't waited long enough). Good news though, you can now pre-order the album from actual online retailers instead of dealing with a .pdf file.
You can order it directly from BurritoDeluxe.com for $16.00 plus shipping or from Amazon.com for $13.98 plus shipping.

January 9, 2007

"Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, co-founder of the Flying Burrito Brothers and founder of Burrito Deluxe, died Saturday (01/06/07) of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 72.

Although he was not a member of the current Burrito Deluxe line-up, I'm sure his loss is deeply felt by the band. For more information, go to: Billboard.com News.

December 14, 2006

The Walternative band is backing up Donna Frost, the renowned writer and singer, at Douglas Corner. Show starts at 9:00 p.m. tonight and lasts about one hour.

December 7, 2006

STILL no actual release date listed for Disciples Of Truth at BurritoDeluxe.com, just the old "January 2007" listing (Are they trying to keep us in suspense? It's December already!). HOWEVER, it is finally available for pre-order through their site. Be warned, though, the order form is a .pdf file, so if you don't have an Adobe Reader you may be out of luck for the time being.

November 6, 2006

A live performance not on the original list:

Saturday, November 11 7:30 - 9:30
Kimbro's Cafe
214 S. Margin St.
Franklin, TN 37064
(615) 599-2946
Website: MySpace.com: Kimbro's Cafe

Walter's comments about the show: "This is a special acoustic round with my two favorite singer/songwriters Sophie and Meg Boes from And Then There Were Two."

October 5, 2006

We finally have a (sort of) release date set for the new Burrito Deluxe cd, Disciples of Truth. According to the band's official website, it's set to come out in January of next year. So much for a Summer 2006 release. Let's hope they don't push the date back again.

You can still download MP3 samples of six of the album's tracks at BurritoDeluxe.com and three full-length downloads are available at AirPlayDirect.com.

September 11, 2006

A heads-up to anyone planning on attending future shows at The Pond in Franklin. This is now a 21 and over only venue, which proved to be a huge disappointment on Saturday night for those kids who, I'm assuming, had come to see opening act And Then There Were Two.

Also, I have some very sad news to report about The Malibooz. On Wednesday, September 6th, I received notice from John Zambetti stating that former Malibooz drummer Bruce Gary passed away from cancer the previous week. In addition to his work on the 2002 Malibooz album Beach Access (and its subsequent tour), Bruce was known for his work with the band The Knack and for his signature drumbeat on the song "My Sharona." He also had a stint with the band The Ventures and can be found playing Robbie Krieger in a bonus video from The Doors DVD box set.

Just a heads up on a couple of updates over at WalterEgan.net:

The webmaster has posted full length MP3 downloads of two more new songs "Love in a Time of War" and "It's Over," previously only available on a disc called Demonstration Recordings, which Walter had circulated privately to friends and associates. Hopefully more tracks from this excellent collection will be made available in the future - or better yet, released as an actual official solo album - but in the meantime, check these out. They're really great!

There is also an announcement of another upcoming live appearance. Walter will be one of the performers at a concert to benefit the Georgetown Entertainment and Media Alliance Screening Room.

May 29,2006

Walter will be playing at The Pond again on Saturday, September 9th. Hmm... that gives me a few months to save up for another trip. :)

May 4, 2006

Apparently something has come up and Gail Lloyd will not be performing at Walter's show this Saturday at The Pond in Franklin. It should still be a blast though and I can't wait to get there!

April 23, 2006

Just a little reminder about Walter's upcoming gig at The Pond in Franklin, TN, on May 6th at 9:30 p.m. Gail Lloyd of Gail and the Tricksters will be performing with Walter and Colleen "C.C." Curtis of Entropy 64 will be there taking photos. Admission is $5.00. Hope to see you there!
In other news, three more MP3 samples - including "On a Roll," featuring Walter on lead vocals - from the upcoming Burrito Deluxe album have been posted on their official website at BurritoDeluxe.com.

April 14, 2006

It turns out that Walter will be joining Gail and the Tricksters for their gig at the Birmingham Swing Dance Club in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, April 21st, after all.
In other news, some songs by The Malibooz are to be included in the upcoming documentary "Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story." No word yet on which songs are to be used, however. For now, try to catch their music in the movie "The Surfer King," out now in limited release.

April 7, 2006

According to BurritoDeluxe.com, the new album will be out this spring. There's no official date as of yet, but it will probably come out sometime around June. For now, you can stop on by their site and download MP3 samples of three of their new tracks.

March 9, 2006

Due to scheduling conflicts, Walter will apparently not be joining Gail and the Tricksters for their shows on April 18 and 21. He will instead be in New York City to do a gig for his college band. However, Walter can be seen on the following dates and locations:

One week to go before the release of Gail Lloyd's "Circles."

She's got quite a bit of info about it posted on her new website, including clips from six of the songs and notes about the album by both her and our 'man of steel' Walter Egan. To visit her site, click here.

Also, Gail and the Tricksters will be playing a show for the Birmingham Swing Dance Club in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, April 21st. More details to follow.

March 1, 2006

It turns out that The Burritos will not be coming to Los Angeles in May afterall. So I'll have to find another birthday gift to give myself this year. :(
It's the first of March and so the countdown begins for Gail Lloyd's "Circles."
And finally, on a completely, totally, utterly unrelated note (but I've got to give some love to another favorite artist), yesterday marked the release of the new solo album, "Memphis in Manhattan", by Tennessee's own Billy Burnette. This is his first solo release in six years. I have my copy ordered and I am rabid with anticipation!

February 14, 2006

Gail Lloyd has announced a release date for her solo CD, titled Circles. The album will be available on March 10. She describes it this way "It is my first solo effort. Full of the usual soul-searching, tormented songwritery stuff -- but I like to think that I've got my own fresh twist on all that ... For those of you who've enjoyed my rockabilly schtick, there's some of the ole' swingin'roots rockin' jump blues fare in there.... But I'm going in some new musical directions too: alternative, country rock... even some latin sounds!!"

January 27, 2006

Six songs by The Malibooz will be featured in an upcoming film titled "The Surfer King," which is scheduled for release in May. The songs to be included are:

"Crest, Then Broken" (Living Water)
"Caught a Wave" (Living Water)
"Faceoff at Point Dume" (Beach Access)
"Shredder" (Beach Access)
"Bel Mar Bolero" (Beach Access)
"Firestorm at Surfrider"(Malibooz Rule!)

For more information about the movie, including cast profiles, teasers, photo gallery, and more, go to TheSurferKing.com

January 13, 2006

Recording for the new Burrito Deluxe album begins next week. The band has expressed interest in recording Walter's "Only the Lucky," originally released on his debut solo album Fundamental Roll.

January 5, 2006

Walter co-produced and played bass and string synth on a song entitled "Get You Back," by Julia Rose. The song was recorded on December 21, 2005. Walter describes the song this way: "terribly sweet..sweet enough to melt any 'ol heart."
According to Julia, there's a strong possibility that Walter will co-produce some of the songs for her next album as well.

December 24, 2005

Walter Egan and the Walternative band will be playing a show Friday, December 30 at The Pond in Franklin, TN as an early kick-off to the new year.
I? Will be in lame-ass Vacaville, California, wishing I was there instead. :(
Maybe next year.

December 9, 2005

Two days ago, Gail Lloyd and Walter Egan finished work on Gail's upcoming solo album. Walter says that "so far it is holding up well to repeated listenings. Always a good sign." I'm sure it's great and I hope the cd release isn't too far off. I'm in need of some new music!

November 25, 2005

Gail and the Tricksters will be playing a show Friday, December 2 at The Pond in Franklin, TN. This will be their last show of the year and possibly the last one for awhile as Gail will be working on her solo album.
Rumor has it that the opening act may be a burlesque show. As always, I won't be there. I'll be a few thousand miles away, sulking.

November 24, 2005

Walter had this to say about his upcoming collaboration with Gail Lloyd: "The production for Gail will take the form of my Walternative disc where I played most of the instruments myself. It will be an intimate recording, with acoustic guitars and a rhythm section that will be more tailored to the songs themselves. It will be more like a singersongwriter album than a rockabilly one."
He also expects to be in the studio with Burrito Deluxe next January to begin work on their upcoming album.
It seems that two of Walter's new songs - "Free" and "Love Me Tonight" - are available as MP3 downloads at Walter's official site, WalterEgan.net. I strongly suggest you check them out, they're fantastic!

November 20, 2005

Walter is currently in the studio doing production on four songs for Billy Otis. He expects to complete that project today.
On November 28, he'll be in the studio again, this time to produce Gail Lloyd's (of Gail and the Tricksters) new cd.

October 27, 2005

Received word that John Zambetti (of The Malibooz) has a solo project in the works. If the song I've had the priveledge of listening to ("Somewhat Removed") is any indication, it's going to be one excellent album!

October 22, 2005

Walter will be performing at The Pond in Franklin, TN on November 5th at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $5.00.
Go if you can. I will be sulking here in California.

October 7, 2005

News on the Malibooz front - John Zambetti is working on music for a new t.v. show that, if it gets picked up, he says "would be a great vehicle for Malibooz' music." Keeping my fingers crossed! The band also has a live album "in the can" awaiting mixing and have been toying with the idea of doing an album more along the lines of the "English sound" rather than surf. Should be interesting.
I've been asked to take over Malibooz.com and have agreed to do so. It may be awhile though before I actually start to revamp it, so stay tuned!
On an unrelated note, Gail and the Tricksters will be doing a show tonight at The Pond in Franklin, TN. Wish I could be there. :(

October 5, 2005

Walter will be playing with Burrito Deluxe in Los Angeles on November 7th-9th.
Figures, Southern California.
He'll also be appearing both solo and with Burrito Deluxe at the Gram Parsons tribute in Waycross, Georgia on October 15th. He expects to be in the studio with the band sometime after the LA gigs.

October 2, 2005

I received word that Walter has been approached by Burrito Deluxe (the latest incarnation of The Flying Burrito Brothers) and may soon be joining their ranks. Nothing's confirmed yet though as to whether he'll be a sideman or frontman.
Also, it seems there may be a European tour in store for our 'man of steel' beginning next March.

October 1, 2005

Received word that "Magnet and Steel" has been picked up for another movie soundtrack! No word on the movie title or plot however.

September 6, 2005

I've had the priveledge of hearing several of Walter's new songs ("Free," "The Moon On An Afternoon," "Love Me Tonight," "Time Passes Changes," and "It's Over") and they sound absolutely wonderful! Here's hoping another album will be out soon.

August 29, 2005

Walter will be traveling to Norway for a few days to play guitar for Steve Haggard at a festival above the Arctic Circle.

July 28, 2005

I received word today that Walter is in the studio recording tracks - two so far, "Free" and "Love Me Tonight" - for what will hopefully be his next album.

July 12, 2005

Walter Egan turns 57 today. Happy Birthday!!!
