This is another one that is near and dear to my heart. "Based on a true story" as they say.

WE SHOULD'VE BEEN

You were out of my mind
I'd moved on with my life
Then last night, in the crowd
I turned . . . and I was starin'at your face.

You reached out your arms
One step, I was in them
Time slipped away
As I stood there. . . in your embrace.

I asked how you'd been
You answered but I didn't hear,
'Cause with your breath in my hair
My resistance faded . . . and my heart began to race.

Chorus:
I know it's wrong
To feel this way again
Now that there's a ring on your left hand.
As I looked into your eyes
And your lips brushed my cheek
Our hearts cried out "We should've been."

We stood there for a while
Talkin'old times and friends
Sharing long forgotten memories
And secrets . . . you whispered in my ear.

I scrambled for words
Talking foolishly I know
Doing everything … anything
Saying silly things. . .just tryin'to keep you near.

I'd stayed away so long
Thought I had it made
That life was mine to live again
But last night . . . the memories brought tears.

Chorus:
I know it's wrong
To feel this way again
Now that there's a ring on your left hand.
As I looked into your eyes
And your lips brushed my cheek
Our hearts cried out "We should've been."

Bridge:
The crowd began to break up
The clock was winding low
I watched as you turned and walked away
But my heart . . . can never let you go.

Chorus: I know it's wrong
To feel this way again
Now that there's a ring on your left hand.
As I looked into your eyes
And your lips brushed my cheek
Our hearts cried out "We should've been."
