24.S.C. JOHNSON and SON Racine, Wisconsin Present JOHNSON'S WAX ENTERTAINERS, PART 1. Produced for NEEDHAM, LOUIS, and BRORBY, INC. By Sound Studios of New York, Inc., 50 West 57th Street, New York, N.Y. under Western Electric Company license. FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. (Mx. # 1788-6; 12" private pressing). Recorded in NY, ca. late 1931 / early 1932.
1.As above, except PART 2. (Mx. # 1789-6).

The above rare 12" white-label disc was intended to promote an upcoming radio show sponsored by Johnson's Wax, featuring TED WEEMS AND HIS ORCHESTRA !! However, on this promotional disc, the band heard is an unknown New York studio group, possibly under the direction of Larry Briers. The announcer is a young HARRY VON ZELL !! Here is the run-down of the songs heard:

A) Hail, Hail the Gang's All Here: band theme (repeated at various times).
B) Hosanna: band (composers? I believe this was recorded by various British bands, ca. late 1931 / early 1932).
C) I'm An Unemployed Sweetheart (Looking For Somebody to Love) (Monaco, Leslie and Washington): vocal HELEN ROWLAND (the "Johnson Wax Doll" !!)
A) (partial) Let's Drink a Drink (To the Future): band.
B) Harry Von Zell contest spiel
C) Take It From Me (I'm Takin' to You) (Fats Waller-Stanley Adams???): voc. HELEN ROWLAND ("Our Little Wax Doll")
D) final Von Zell reminder about Johnson's contest.

(Note that Helen Rowland is in terrific form; in fact, I've never heard her in better voice. In order to fit this onto this disc, I (WF) had to cut the ending announcement, which includes the following gem - an amazing example of truth-in-advertising from Von Zell after Rowland sings "Take It From Me": "ŠAnd if you don't get a flock of new customers for Johnson's Wax, and if you don't do a whale of a rental business on the polishers, then S.C. Johnson and Company are spending a small fortune for nothing !!")

Toasted by John Leifert and Dan Levinson; co-ordinated by Wilsci.
Contributors: Dan Levinson; Paul Lindemeyer; Bob Conrad; Jeff Healey; Henry Schmidt.
Special thanks to Dan Levinson, without whom this project would not have been possible; and dedicated to the late, great Rosy McHargue. John Leifert, July 2001. ---------
