HIMBER-RIFFIC:
THE COMPLETE RICHARD HIMBER

In Seven CDs!

From the Collection of Father Knickerbocker
Additional thanks to David Carey, John Leifert, Jeff Healey and The Toastmaster General

This set contains all recordings by Richard Himber that are known to exist. We know it is complete in terms of all the pre-war recordings, with the possible exception of The Royale sides. We have assembled all the Himber Royales that are believed to have been issued, but because there is no listing of Himber's work for the label (which is not covered in Rust's American Dance Band Discography), there may be other titles. In addition, there also may be other post-war recordings of which we have no knowledge.

John Leifert prepared the many additions and corrections to the personnel listings from Rust. These were based on a combination of interviews with the late Joey Nash as well as information from music industry publications of the period.

Volume I

Richard Himber directing a "Rudy Vallee Orchestra" vocal by James Harkins, circa Early '32. Hit of the Week, simulated radio b'cast with announcements, applause and a request - even an ending theme. Himber is announced but no orchestra name is mentioned on the label.

1. DANCING ON THE CEILING into OF THEE I SING - HotW 9-AD-16 / mx 5058B "Which do you prefer?"

The Vocalion (ARC) Sessions, 1933-'34:

Leifert: Joey Nash claimed that Tommy Dorsey-tb was on every one of the Vocalion sessions except for 9/18/33; I took that with a grain of salt, until I actually heard them. HE'S RIGHT! Tommy is DEFINITELY on the 9/5/33 and 10/2/33 sessions, and takes wonderful solos on "Smoke Rings", "Sophisticated Lady", "Gather Lip Rouge While You May" (HOT!), and a typical "Sentimental Gentleman" muted solo on "You're My Past, Present and Future". I'm not sure of his presence on the 8/7/33 and the 11/21/33 dates, but even though there are no solos, it seems more likely than not that he's there. So, change the personnel at top of 8/7/33 to read Tommy Dorsey, and omit "?Jerry Colonna" (who MAY have been on 8/7, but who can say...).

Also, Herman Wolfson-ts is on EVERY Himber date inclusive from 9/5/33 to 10/23/34 , and also on the 2/11/35 session (except for 9/18/33). I don't know if he's present on 8/7/33, and can't hear him in the sax section on the 12/5/34 date; you could keep the tenor sax listing as shown for 8/7/33 JUST FOR THAT DATE, but make it "Herman Wolfson-ts definite" for the later dates as stated above.

DICK HIMBER AND HIS ESSEX HOUSE ORCHESTRA : Richard Himber - vn dir. Ruby Weinstein Johnny McGee - t / Tommy Dorsey - tb / ? ARTHUR NICHOLS AND HIS ORCHESTRA
Rust: In view of the vocalist's being Joey Nash, at that time featured with Richard Himber and his Essex House Orchestra, q.v., there is a distinct possibility that this is a pseudonym for Richard Himber or made by some of his sidemen, augmented by regular studio musicians.
Leifert: Tracks 20 through 23, "Do You Miss Me Tonight" (a WALTZ, by the way, mx 14811), "You Oughta Be In Pictures" (mx 14812), "That's Love" (mx 14813) and "Why Do I Dream Those Dreams" (mx 14814) are listed in Rust under "ARTHUR NICHOLS AND HIS ORCHESTRA". They are apparently by the full Himber orchestra, sans harp. All have Joey Nash vocals. By the way the trombone heard on this date is NOT Dorsey; possibly Jerry Colonna...Wolfson IS present here on tenor sax.

New York, February 14, 1934.

20. Do You Miss Me Tonight? <Waltz> Voc 2644 (14811)
21. You Oughta Be In Pictures Voc 2644 (14812)

The Bluebird and Victor Sessions,
1934-1939:

RICHARD HIMBER AND HIS RITZ - CARLTON ORCHESTRA:
Leifert: The personnel for March 19, 1934 (according to Nash) was: Richard Himber-vn-dir. Ruby Weinstein-Charlie Margulis-t/Tommy Dorsey-tb/Artie Shaw-cl-as/Benny Goodman-cl-as/Herman Wolfson-cl-ts/ Sam Persoff and another-vn/Eddie Steinberg-p/Ernie Capozzi g/Jack Kimmel-sb/Nat Levine-d. Believe it or not, Shaw's Goodman's AND Dorsey's presence on 3/19/34 was confirmed by both Nash and Capozzi!! Joey Nash no longer plays sax with the band by this time, doing vocals EXCLUSIVELY (this from the March 1934 issue of Metronome).. I don't know if this particular personnel continued on the Himber Victor dates through the rest of 1934; I doubt it, since Benny was starting his own band and had other fish to fry, so to speak... Now that I think of it, I don't know who the alto sax player is who replaced Joey Nash; better to leave it as "unknown" from 6/12/34 session onward.

New York, March 19, 1934.

The most jazz-influenced Himber session to this point is the 4/6/36 date, with excellent Artie Shaw-cl, Mannie Klein-t and Jack Lacey-tb solos on practically every title. I would think that Shaw had more than a little bit to do with this fact! The June 1936 issue of Orchestra World states that BERNIE GREEN is the arranger of track 28, "Celebratin'" (4/6/36). It also confirms Mannie Klein's presence instead of Berigan's (the only confirmed Berigan Himber date is 7/27/36 only).
