Agreements
All successful songwriters and composers will be presented with a Publishing Agreement and/or Licensing Agreement. If you are seeking a publishing deal for the latest song you have created and a publisher can't wait to sign it up you are going to receive a publishing agreement to sign. Understanding this agreement can be a 'nightmare' to you especially if you really don't know or understand the terminology and what rights you could potentially sign away to the publisher. Of course you could make an appointment to see a 'music industry lawyer' who will happily explain all of the different clauses to you and charge you an absolute fortune for the privilege - there is another solution however.
Help is at hand - The Guild of International Songwriters has negotiated with Panorama Music Ltd a deal to make available, reference copies of a (1) single song assignment publishing agreement (2) exclusive songwriting publishing agreement and (3) phonographic rights licensing agreement (record and video). Remember the saying 'Knowledge is Power' if you understand what you are being offered by a music publisher, with an agreement, then you may be able to negotiate a better deal which means more money in your pocket instead of it going into the publishers pocket. And, you will know and understand what rights are vitally important to you before you sign any agreement.
