The Sheffield Youth Orchestra is a registered charity, (No. 501699), and was set up 30 years ago to help young local musicians gain real orchestral experience.
The Orchestra meets weekly during term time, and usually gives three concerts per year; one at the end of each school term.
Regular activities include an annual residential weekend, which is highly enjoyable and important to the ongoing development of the orchestra; both musically and socially.
SYO is always interested in recruiting new members, and membership is subject to audition and a modest annual subscription.
The standard required varies according to instrument, and the number of places available. However, the following is a good guide:Strings: Grade 4+
Woodwind: Grade 6+
Brass: Grade 5+New members progress very quickly, and the overall standard of the orchestra is high.
