On August 18, 2006, Mrs. Rita Marley was appointed spokesperson for the Desmond Tutu Emerging Leadership Programme in South Africa. It is a project that cultivates, recognizes and rewards youth who have displayed remarkable leadership qualities; and whose works have positively impacted and extraordinarily transformed their communities.

TUTU HAS TEA WITH SA YOUTH LEADERS

FRIDAY18 AUGUST2006: Today, 20 learners from across Cape Town willdiscuss pressing social issues with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Mrs Rita Marley, wife of the legendary Bob Marley, over tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel.

Both Archbishop Tutu and Rita Marley are icons of Africa and will honour the 20 youth for about 1-2 hours in discussion about peace and leadership in Africa and globally.

The secondary school learners willseek answers and advice on leadership and the current and future obstacles and goals facing their communities and their country.

The tea is part of an awards day celebrating the completion of the fourth annual Desmond Tutu Emerging Leadership Programme. The day willbe completed with a dinner and ceremony in the evening, with the Archbishop Emeritus and Mrs Marleyamoragthe many VIP guests attending the event.

Another purpose for Rita Marley's visit is to continue discussions for the forthcoming 'Africa Unite' Concert to be held on Bob Marley's birthday (February 6) in Cape Town next year.

The concert is part of a mission to empower communities and to alleviate poverty, especially in Africa, based on the principles of compassion and love. .

The Desmond Tutu Emerging Leadership Programme (ELP) is one of the South AfriCaj organizations that will benefit from the event.

The ELP was chosen because of its strong focus on peace and leadership training, part cularly in Africa. Plans are a foot to introduce the EL Pina number of African countries-including Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia- in the near future.

The Programme

The Desmond Tutu Emerging Leadership Programme (ELP)aims to foster youth development and values-based leadership in order to promote peace.

The programme, based on the values inspired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is aimed at youths, particularly those from communities that have been traditionally excluded from social participation and those who carry a commitment to improving the lives of young people.

The focus of the programme is on upholding human dignity and respect, building togetherness and activatingyoung people's involvementin leadership efforts to promote greater social and community development across the globe.
