Providing quality instruction in beginning to
advanced percussion arts since 1984
Kevin A. Downs
Percussion Instructor for
Poland and Canfield Schools
Students are instructed towards a goal of above average performance quality within their school music programs. However, each student is assessed individually and approached according to their own skills, talents, abilities and interests. Percussion lessons offer a student many more benefits in mental and physical development that may outlast his or her involvement with the instrument. It is this aspect that truly guides the path of instruction. Beginning students will study basic rhythms and techniques on the snare drum for an average of six months before approaching drumset applications. During this time many other accessory instruments used in the school programs are addressed. Included are bells, xylophone, bass drum, crash and suspended cymbals, triangle, wood block, cow bell, tambourine and many more. Students who have studied previously may need to enter a review period of 2-6 weeks depending on their past studies. Generally most areas of review are studied while in progress through new material.
