Staff Nurse-Vaccinations

Oral polio vaccine (OPV)is given most often to children by mouth as drops, and they should receive four doses at the ages of 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months, and 4-6 years. The child receiving the vaccine or any other person coming into contact with the child receiving the vaccine should not receive the vaccine because of any kind of immunosuppression. Examples of immunosuppression would be a person who has AIDS or a person who is receiving chemotherapy. The OPV can cause the manifestation of poliomyelitis in rare instances. In India "during 2001, approximately 70% of infants aged < 1 year received 3 or more doses of OPV through routine nationwide vaccination"(MMWR,vol 52, No. 9, March 7,2003). The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has instituted national immunization days and supplementary immunization activities in an attempt to eradicate the disease in defined areas.
