Staff Nurse - Cultural Liaison
Hi! My name is Renu Malik, and I am a registered nurse. I came to the United States from India with my parents when I was 10 years old. I often travel to India to visit my relatives. I have my Master's in Nursing, and I have taken a one year sabbatical from my job at a local nursing school in order to work as a liaison between the workers of this outreach program and the people of India. Below is a list of my responsibilities as well as valuable web sites for you to learn about my country and culture. I will be dispensing written material to all healthcare workers about the Indian culture and what it is to be culturally sensitive. I will also be dispensing written material in layperson language to all villagers about the disease of polio and the vaccination program, and I have worded it so that the material will reflect the language, beliefs, experiences and values of the people who live in the state of Bihar. I will also be showing a video of the same material to thoses villagers who do not know how to read.
Responsibilities:
- To educate all health care workers about what it means to be culturally sensitive.
- To provide information about the history, religion, and culture of India to all health care workers.
- To be available at all times to answer questions about any issues which may arise.
