Twilight Odyssey - 2003 Demo 3/5

Tracklist:

1. Gettysburg (The blue and the gray)
2. The endless days of a stranger
3. Defiler

The 2 things that stand out right away with this band is they play traditonal power metal with obvious influences from Iron Maiden, and the female vocalist (Pamela Berlinghof) really knows how to sing. Not in the opera style that we've heard with recent power metal bands (Nightwish, Edenbridge, etc.), but rather with a slightly deeper tone that fits this music style very well. You won't find any keyboards with this band, and that may be nice for those not really into the Italian and Scandinavian sounding bands.

Track 1 "Gettysburg (The blue and the gray)" has some aggressive vocals, and there's no holding back with the guitars either, as an excellent guitar solo (though short) shows us these guys are capable of great guitar work. But this song is average to me when compared to the outstanding tracks 2 & 3. Track 2 "The endless days of a stranger" has me thinking of 'Piece of mind' era Iron Maiden right from the start. There are lots of fans of the earlier Iron Maiden days, so the music style will appeal to many. The nice galloping riff and cool guitar solos definitely keep the song interesting. This is also where Pamela Berlinghof begins to remind me of the female vocalist Sonia Pineault from the Canadian band Forgotten Tales. They seem to have the same tone, and this is a good thing, as Forgotten Tales is an excellent band. The female vocals here are never over done, and have a nice flow. Track 3 "Defiler" again reminds me of Iron Maiden, but this time the vocals seem to soar more in a Bruce Dickenson style (yes, really!), and again are well done. The dual guitars are great, and continue throughout the entire song. The songwriting potential of the band really shows on this last song.

I was impressed with the quality of catchiness and nice playing coming from a demo. The vocals flow pretty well with the music, and the high number of guitar solos is always a plus. Lovers of traditional power metal and female fronted bands can definitely look forward to their debut.
