Female fronted bands are sure getting popular, but I'm a big fan of female fronted bands, so I was very curious to hear how this band would fit in with the others. Angtoria is probably most comparable to Elis and Delight, but there's also a strong influence from Epica, as Angtoria is more symphonic than Elis and Delight. In fact, Angtoria is pure symphonic metal, not having the gothic metal touch that these other mentioned bands have. Sarah Jezebel Deva (Cradle of Filth, Therion, and others) is the female vocalist, and she's perfect for this style of symphonic metal. She has a different style of singing when compared to the vocalists of Elis and Delight, so it wasn't until the 3rd spin that I was used to her voice (which is great) and started to hear how the vocals and music fit together, a new sound for me.
Track 1 "Six feet underīs not deep enough" is great! The most power metalish song on the CD, lots of speed, and sounding a lot like something off Delight's excellent 'The fading tale' CD. Track 2 "Confide in me" is also solid, but more mid-paced, with lots of orchestration and some excellent soaring vocals. We get a great chorus with track 3 "Suicide on my mind", and track 4 "Deity of disgust" returns to the Delight sound a bit, but with strong orchestral parts. We also get some male vocals with this song, and he probably should have had the lead in this one, as he seems to fit this unique song a little better than Sara Jezebel Deva. Track 5 "A child that walks in the path of a man" is a nice finish consistent with the previous songs, so definitely an above average Demo.
The diverse singing style of Sarah Jezebel Deva might really be a plus for the band, providing a different sound to those into this style. Musically, they're right up there with the best of them, so Angtoria can surely compete with the other bands in this style. But can they rise above the best bands in the style, only time will tell. I don't think there's any reason this band couldn't have a successful future though.
