A Shooting Star

I see it go across the sky.

“Did you see that?” Joel asks. I nod and he smiles, “Make a wish.” I lean my head against the glass and let my thoughts take over. I think about him. Everything he is. Everything he’s brought me, happiness, love… Everything I am now, because of him.

“Did you make a wish?” Joel asks and I nod, smiling in the darkness of the car. My thoughts fall once again to my beautiful boyfriend waiting at home. Waiting for the relief of the cold pills that we went and got for him. My poor baby, he looked so miserable as we walked out the door.

Joel pulls up in front of the house and I run inside. I grab a glass of water and dash up the stairs to our bedroom. I open the door slowly and the light from the hallway falls across his face. Even in his restless sleep he looks gorgeous. I just stand in the doorway watching him.

Joel walks by and touches my arm, jumping me out of my lover-induced stare. “Is he feeling better?” I shake my head still watching him as he turns his head away from us, the back of his fluffy, messy hair towards us. We say Goodnight and Joel leaves to his room.

I close the door behind me, dark consuming the bedroom once again. I flip on the dim desk lamp and move across the room to the bed, sitting lightly at his side on the bed. The only sound in the room is his breathing, the only evidence of him being sick and the paleness in his skin.

I brush his hair away from his sweaty forehead and he nuzzles lightly into my hand still asleep. I smile and lean down, kissing his forehead, “Billy, baby wake up.” I run my thumb over his cheek, “I’ve got medicine for you.”

His eyes flutter open and I see him struggle to swallow, “Throat still sore?” I ask. He nods and licks his lips opening his mouth to speak. I stop him, “Shhhh. Here, can you sit up?” he nods and I fix the covers as he leans against the headboard. I gave him the pills and he downs then with the water. I smile and situate him back in the covers. He smiles weakly up at me.

I climb over him onto the other side of the bed and pull him close to me, his head resting on my chest. I run my hands over his scalp and he purrs. I smile, “I saw a shooting star on the way home.” He smiles and looks up at me, “I made a wish, well it wasn’t really a wish. More like a thanks.” He smiles again and cuddles closer. “I thanked the greater powers for bringing you to me. Letting me finally be happy.” I slide down so we’re closer together, “Thank you.” I kiss him on the forehead, “I love you,” I lean in to kiss him but a hand on my chest stops me.

He smiles, “I might get you sick,” his voice scratches. I shrug, “oh well,” and finish moving in to kiss him.

I pull away and stay with him till he falls back asleep. The rest of the night I watch him sleep, the whole time grateful for everything I have. Everything we have.
