Ch. 5 They Don’t Fit

Julie slowly hobbled down the stairs. Ashley heard her coming, “Billy called and said they got our tickets. The information is right by the phone,” she said without looking up from her bowl of cereal. They were going to fly in two days to join the guys at their last show and drive back home with them. Julie mumbled, “Uh huh.” Ashley looked up, “Are you okay? You look pale.” Julie nodded sitting down at the table. “I really don’t feel good at all. I think I got some kind of flu or something.” “How long have you had it?” Ashley asked feeling her forehead. “Like a week or so.” “Have you gone to the doctor’s?” she asked still feeling motherly. Julie shook her head, “I thought it would just pass- but now I don’t feel good at all. Hand me the phone- I'm gonna call in sick.” She only had two days of work before a three-day weekend. Julie called in and when she hung up the phone Ashley gave her a pair of shoes, “Put these on. We’re going to the doctor’s.” Julie took them and sighed, “You don’t have to. I can go by myself.” Ashley refused and soon they were in the waiting room of the doctor’s office surrounded by sick people and the icky clean hospital smell.

The nurse took Julie and Ashley into a little room. They asked the normal questions, “How long have you felt ill?” “A week and a half.” “Are you sexually active?” “I’m married, yes.” “What are your symptoms?” “Flu like.” “Do you have a fever?” “Yes.” “Do you have any kinds of health problems?” “No.” It had been a while since Julie had been to the doctor’s. They took blood and checked her out. “Well, there’s nothing we can really give you for the flu but here’s some cough medicine and other things that would help you,” the doctor finished up. “When we get the tests back tomorrow, we’ll call. If you do have anything you can come back and we’ll give you appropriate medicine. Just go home get some rest.”

Julie went home, ate some saltines and went to bed. She woke up to the phone ringing at about 7 o’clock that night. Ashley picked it up and came into the room. It was Benji. She took the phone. “Hi Benji.” “What’s up? You sound tired?” “I haven’t been feeling well and today it got worse so I went to the doctor’s.” “Well what do you have?” “Like the flu or something.” “Oh, I wish I could be there to take care of you. Do you feel well enough to fly up here?” “Yeah, I'm sure I will. I just need to rest for a day or so.” They talked for a while longer before Julie started to get sick to her stomach again. “Okay baby, I’ll let you go. Call me tomorrow if you still don’t feel well enough to come. I’ll call at about 9 in the morning and then I’ll see you at 8:30 at the airport,” Benji said sadness in his voice that he couldn’t be there to take care of her. “I love you. Get some rest so you can feel better.” “Okay, bye Benji. I love you too.” She hung up and fell back asleep. She woke up the next morning at about 7 still feeling sick but a tad bit better. She went downstairs and ate some dry toast. Ashley came down lugging a big bag, “Okay I'm packed.” Julie laughed, “We’re only going to be away for three days.” Ashley shrugged, “Oh well. Are you packed yet? Want me to help? You still look like you don’t feel good.” “Yeah, let’s go. I feel a tiny bit better than yesterday.”

They went upstairs and packed Julie’s bag. “Hey Ashley, grab me those pants next to Benji’s Mest sweatshirt. They’re his but they’re comfy,” she laughed. Ashley grabbed them then took a pair of Julie’s jeans out. “Hey you should take these. You look good in them.” Julie shook her head, “I know but I cant. I don’t fit in them right anymore. I guess I gained some weight. Oh well, I’ll lose it as soon as Benji comes back,” she grinned. Ashley didn’t understand at first but turned around, “Oh I get it.” The phone rang and Julie grabbed for it laughing. It was Benji again, “You sound good. Do you feel better?” Julie smiled, “Yeah a little bit.” They talked for a little while Julie finished packing. “Okay good. Well I just wanted to see how you were. We have to go clean the bus out- it’s so bad and it smells. I don’t think you want to even come on it. So I’ll see you at 8:30. Go get some rest. I love you. Bye.” She said goodbye and hung up the phone then went to put it back in the charger cradle and it rang. She answered it, “Hello?” It was the doctor’s office. “Hello? Mrs. Madden?” “Yeah that’s me.” “We got your results back from the lab and we need you to come down and get some medicine.” Julie got dressed and they went back to the doctor’s office.

They were put back in a room and the doctor walked in. “Mrs. Madden, what are you doing here? Didn’t someone call you?” the nerdy doctor asked. “Yeah, they said I needed some medicine and to come in.” she said smiling at the doctor’s stupidity. “Well who was it that called you?” “I think she said her name was Marjorie or something like that.” The doctor flipped through her charts and smiled, “Well you aren’t sick- you’re pregnant.” Julie’s eyes got wide, “What?” The doctor nodded, “The blood tests showed that you are pregnant.” “But how can that be? I haven’t- my husbands been gone for four months. I think I would have known before now,” she said in disbelief. The doctor smiled, “Well if you want you can take a pregnancy test right now to see for sure.” Julie nodded her head and the doctor went to get one. She turned to Ashley, “Am I pregnant? But its been four months.” The doctor came back and they did the test. The doctor sat there waiting with Julie and Ashley for the test to result. The doctor handed it to Julie, “See. You’re pregnant.” Julie was still in shock, “But it’s been four months.” The doctor laughed handing her pamphlets on pregnancy, “Well then you’re four months pregnant!” Ashley asked quietly, “Are you upset? Benji wont be mad.” Julie shook her head and laughed slightly, “I guess I'm just shocked.” She laughed, “So that’s why my pants wouldn’t fit!”
