Ch 6 Confession Night

“The last time you said that you told us you were sleeping together,” Paul chuckled, “what are you wanting a foursome or something?” Benji and Joel smiled, “No, no. But it is serious so all joking aside…”

“I’ll start from the beginning,” Joel said shakily, “umm, about three weeks ago Benj and I ran into Jadie at the supermarket.”

“Wait bitch Jadie?” Billy asked.

Joel nodded and cleared his throat, “Yeah, so umm,” Joel stood and began pacing a little, “She had- a surprise I guess you could say.”

Benji caught his eyes and he calmed down a little.

“Okay,” Joel continued but began to speak quickly (a/n: read it like hes saying it really fast like all one breath!), “well ya know I had to sleep with Jadie to keep up the cover I mean we were engaged and everything and I guess I was careless one time even though I hated having to sleep with her anyways I guess I got her pregnant.” Joel said and looked at his feet.

“What?” Paul and Billy asked simultaneously.

Joel took a shaky breath and repeated this time slowly, “I got her pregnant.”

Billy and Paul’s eyebrows raised, “Well what happens now?”

“Hold on I’m not done yet,” Joel said as he sat down and ran his hands over his head, “Benj, can you get…”

Benji softy said ‘yes’ and got up to get Jonah. Billy and Paul exchanged confused glances and watched as Benji disappeared down the hall. They turned their gaze to Joel who was holding his head in his hands.

Benji reappeared with Jonah in his hands but was still behind Billy and Paul so they couldn’t see him yet. Joel looked up and smiled slightly then motioned for Benji to give Jonah to him.

As Benji stepped in front of the couch, Billy and Paul looked even more confused.

Joel got Jonah comfortable and cleared his throat, “Guys,” Billy and Paul looked at Jonah then Benji then Joel, “This is Jonah, my son.”

“So are you getting back with Jadie?” Paul asked after a second of silence.

“Not exactly,” Joel shook his head. “She umm, she left him with me.”

“So that’s it?” Billy asked still calm, “She just left him with you? So what happens now?”

“What happens to Good Charlotte?” Paul continued.

“Nothing,” Benji said finally as he motioned for Keri to come in, “nothing is changing. Keri is gonna watch him when we have to perform or meet-and-greet or do TV. She can be closer to Steve. So we have a kid with us, Keri has offered to watch him- we can still go out. Nothing has changed.”

“Are you sure?” Paul asked looking between the twins and Keri.

Keri nodded, “Yes. It was my job to be on call 24/7 as a midwife before so it won’t be any different now.”

“What if it doesn’t work?” Billy asked still skeptical.

“Then we’ll deal with it when it comes along. We dealt with the whole ‘us’ thing right?” Joel answered.

Billy and Paul nodded. “Yeah, that’s true,” Paul said.

“There’s just one more thing,” Billy smiled, “can I hold him?”

(a/n: okay so lets say this is about three days later- aww baby Jonah is a 6 days old-lets all say it- awww! And Keri had to go somewhere.)

“Why wont she pick up her cell?” Benji whined.

“Maybe she’s testing us,” Joel sighed as he rocked Jonah, “come on stop crying please?”

“Okay he’s been at it for an hour and a half- Jonah what’s wrong?” Benji said taking crying Jonah in his arms.

“We changed his diaper, fed him, burped him, he’s not tired…I wish I knew what was wrong.” Joel stood and paced as Benji tried to calm the baby.

“We need a plan B,” Benji said.

“What time is it?” Joel jumped with an idea.

“4:30, why?”

“Mom!” Joel said running to the phone with Benji following him.

“No, then we’ll have to explain everything to her.”

Joel began dialing, “We have to tell her sometime. She’ll be happy she’s a grandmother.”

“Fine,” Benji said walking into the other room still trying to soothe baby Jonah.

“Mom, Benj and I have a problem. What are you doing right now?”

More crying and twenty minutes later, Joel answered the door as Benji was dancing across the family room floor with Jonah in his arms.

“Make him stop and we’ll explain,” Joel said pointing with a sad expression that their mom couldn’t say no to.

She took Jonah and sat down rocking him gently, “How long has he been crying? I see dancing isn’t helping.” She offered a smile.

“Almost two hours now.”

“Well let’s see…did you try singing to him?” she asked- they nodded.

“How about rocking him?” they nodded again.

“Have you tried letting him listen to a clothes dryer?” she asked.

“We don’t have one.”

“How about a clock,” she asked, they nodded.

“We’ve tried everything,” Benji said, as Joel rested his head on his shoulder- close but not too close.

“Okay this is the only thing that worked for you two but made Sarah and Josh cry more,” she said as she took the blanket and wrapped him in it. She held Jonah close and patted this strange pattern on his back with her hands. In less than a minute Jonah’s cried slowed and then stopped altogether.

Benji and Joel’s mouths dropped open, “How’d you do that?”

She smiled, “Cuz after four kids, I know! Plus I bet you two were walking around and making a fuss which made him more upset.”

Joel nodded, “Yeah, its hard not to get frustrated. How can a thing that small cry soo much?”

Their mom laughed then questioned, “Well, you said if I got him to stop you’d explain…”

Joel nodded and sat up. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly then smiled, “Mom, meet your first grandson.”

She nodded, “I figured that- now keep explaining.”

“Well, okay. Remember when I told you that Jadie and I broke up?” She nodded and he continued, “I guess before we broke up I got her pregnant. And she just told me three weeks before he was born. She left him to me, just left him. What was I supposed to do? So now, this is Jonah, my son.” Joel said as he sat next to his mom and leaned slightly against her like a child wanting comfort.

“So how are you doing?” she asked.

“I'm scared.” Joel said, “I don’t know if I can do this. We have our manager’s wife that’s been helping us and she’s offered to go on tour with us to take care of him. But I'm scared.”

Joel’s breathing got ragged, “The night we brought him home I actually thought about giving him up for adoption,” Joel tried to fight the tears but it was too much, “But…but I'm already soo attached to him.”

Benji’s own eyes teared up at the sight of Joel.

“I'm soo scared that I have complete control of that tiny life. I'm soo scared that I’ll be a bad father. For the rest of my life, he is dependent on me.”

Benji got up and sat on the arm of the couch hugging Joel. Joel calmed down and their mother smiled assuring, “You’re good with children. And if you’re at all worried about it- you two are nothing like your father. So don’t be worried. But one more question, you never told me why you and Jadie broke up.”

Joel rested his head on the back of the sofa then lifted it. He looked at him mom and she took his hand, “You can tell me.”

He nodded, “Remember you’re holding a now sleeping baby that has been crying for the last two hours…and that I’m your son and you love me…”

“Joel?”

“Okay…I’m…I’m gay.” He said looking at his hands.

“Oh I know, I was just wondering when you would know.” She smiled at the confused looks on their faces. “And Benji is too.”

“How did you know?” they said together.

She smiled and laughed lightly, “I’ve known since you were about 18.”

They smiled and relaxed as their mom comforted them, “And don’t be afraid about raising this little one. You two have a lot of love to offer and as long as you share that with this child- you’ll be fine.”

“Joel, can I speak with you in the kitchen?” Benji asked. He nodded and they stepped in the kitchen. “Are we gonna tell her about us?”

Joel sighed, “She took the baby and the gay parts good, what do you think?”

“I think that we don’t have anything to lose- she’s our mom, she wont hate us forever.”

They rejoined her, “Mom, there’s something else we need to tell you.” Benji said nervously.

“What is this confession night?” she smiled.

Benji shrugged, “Okay there’s no easy way to say this so… Joel and I are sort of…together.”

She nodded then handed Jonah to Joel, “I don’t really know how to respond to that.”

“Say anything? Are you mad, grossed out, anything?” Benji asked.

She shook her head, “No, you two have always been close. If you are sure and love each other then…” She smiled, “I love you more than anything and if it makes you happy, you have my support.”
