MEETING
THE WALLFLOWERS AND DEAN DEL RAY
April 20
2003
It took
about an hour and forty five minutes to get to the Stone Pony in Asbury
Park from where I live. The traffic was bad in some areas, but we still
managed to get there early. Forty five minutes early, standing outside the
door with the freezing wind blowing off of the ocean.
So we're
just waiting out there and this guy starts yelling that you can't get in
w/out an i.d. (it's a bar) so I'm like great, I'm 15. But things worked
out. When the line started moving, I was just thrilled to get inside. I
could not believe the stage. I walked right up to it, and stood about 5
feet from where the guys were about to perform.
We
waited for a while before Dean Del Ray opened up the show. He did like a
couple of his own songs and one or two covers, one was ACDC, they were all
awesome. He was really cool with the crowd, talking to people and stuff
like that. Then this other guy came out, and he was really good too but I
don't know what his name was. (I'm going to find out.) So when he went off
the stage and it was somewhere around 9:00.
We ended
up waiting for another half hour until the Wallflowers came out. I was so
flipped out about how close I was to them. Tops 6 or 7 feet. I was right
up against the stage. And it was cool because of how social the guys were,
talking to people in the audience and all. This one time Jacob turns to me
and starts talking, and I could tell he was, I mean he was right there.
And he's asking some question like whether we liked his version or Dean's
version of this song. It was just flipped out.
So then
he's playing, and I'm checking out his fingering on the guitar (I play too
so I'm always looking at those things) and I watch as one of the 8
strings, it was like the third one down, just snaps off. So Jake keeps
playing like no big deal and flicks the thing onto the floor of the stage.
the second the song ends I'm like waving my hand up at Greg, the guy on
bass, asking for the string. so he actually went and got it for me.
