Top Ten Drummers

This is our list of the top ten drummers courtesy of Scott Smart. the reasons will apear later when they are written...

#1 John Bonham

John Bonham was a revolutionary drummer of unmatched skill and talent. He was a friend of Robert Plant’s since childhood and the two played together in the Band of Joy. In 1968 the two joined Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones to form the New Yardbirds: Led Zeppelin. John experienced much success with the band and is best known for the Moby Dick solo in the film: The Song Remains the Same in which he played five minutes with his bare hands. Sadly, John died in September 1980 and Led Zeppelin was unable to carry on, but John’s influence still lives on.

#2 Alex Van Halen

Long before Van Halen hit it big on Sunset Strip, Alex was playing the guitar and brother Edward was playing the drums, but eventually the two switched and became famous. Alex was well-known for lighting a gong on fire and hitting it with a flaming gong-hammer during concerts. One of his best works is the song Hot for Teacher off of the album 1984.

#3 Niko McBrain

While most drummers have trouble getting noticed, this one no trouble doing so. Nicko McBrain joined Iron Maiden in 1983 and became known as the driving force of the band from then on. His bandmates were astounded by his talent and ability to play along with them. Onstage he earned the nickname “The Mad McBrain” by leaping shirtless from his stool and running around the stage. Although well-known for his attitude, his skill at drums surpasses it by far. Don’t believe me? Then listen to Be Quick or Be Dead off of Fear of the Dark.

#4 Neil Peart

Neil Peart played for the legendary Canadian band Rush. While guitarist Alex Lifeson was sceptical about hiring Neil, bassist and frontman Geddy Lee was able to convince him otherwise. After a recording a few albums, Neil worked with jazz drumming guru Freddie Gruber(not on this list) to perfect his technique. He is well-known for his long solos in which he sits on a rotating platform surrounded by drums and plays his heart out for half an hour.

#5 Lars Ulrich

Lars Ulrich, along with James Hetfield created Metallica in 1981 and re defined heavy metal. He is known for his use of the double bass pedal in songs such as One and St-Anger. His talent and skills are amazing, Scott's are not.

#6 Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl is the primal beast behind the beats or Nirvana's pop/punk/grunge thing. He pounded the skins to suit the simple songs Kurt Cobain wrote. After Kurt Cobain killed himself, Dave continued a non-drumming career with the Foo Fighters. In the year 2002, he recieved loads of critical acclaim for his show stopping work with the alt-metal kings, Queens of the Stone Age.

#7 Vinnie Paul

He helped form the legendary industrial metal band, along with his brother Dimebag Darrell. His skill with the double bass kick drums was amazing. He played many intense songs like 13 steps to nowhere. Definetly one of the fastest drummers and one of the most hard hitting drummers of the century.

#8 Steve Adler

The original drummer of Guns 'N Roses, although he was not with them for very long. He played Appetite for Destruction, which was a good album. As G N' R have had many replacement drummers none are better than Steve Adler

#9 Dave Lombardo

The drummer for the fore fronters of death metal, the lightening fast drummer displayed both fast arms and lightening fast double bass. One of the fastest double bass players in the world.

#10 Bill Ward

Drummer for the band that started it all, Black Sabbath, Bill Ward was known for his ability to be un-consistant, which is pretty tough, and sounding good at it, which is even harder. One of the best examples of his work is the song Iron Man, in which he plays a 4 piece set, but makes it sound like he's got an 8 piece. Just listen to the song and you'll understand.
