[Greatest Hits]

THE CURE
"Greatest Hits"
Fiction Records/Elektra Records (62725-2)
Release Date: November 13, 2001

The Cure's Greatest Hits contains eighteen tracks, including many of the usual suspects ("Boys Don't Cry," "Let's Go To Bed," "Close To Me," "Just Like Heaven," "Lovesong," "Friday I'm In Love," "Mint Car," etc.). Also included on the disc are two new songs: "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes." "Cut Here" is a melancholy track about regret; the lyrics talk about how you can take the time with someone for granted, but then that person is suddenly gone, and you realize just how much you truly took the other person for granted. "Just Say Yes" is a more upbeat song, and features Saffron from Republica on guest vocals. "Just Say Yes" is about jumping into something with both feet, without any hesitation.

I think the songs that appear on Greatest Hits make sense (since this is a "greatest hits" package, it usually means that the most popular singles will appear on the disc). I also feel that "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes" are good additions to the package.

This review covers the limited edition version of Greatest Hits, which includes a bonus disc of acoustic renditions of the eighteen tracks on the greatest hits package (the bonus disc is titled, Acoustic Hits). Basically, the arrangements for the acoustic versions stayed very true to the original arrangements. Hearing the songs in an acoustic arrangement is a refreshing change of pace. The only real disappointment here is "Wrong Number"; personally, I didn't think that it worked very well as an acoustic track (it just seems to lose something when done in this kind of arrangement).

Greatest Hits is a very solid greatest hits album, and I feel it would work as a good introduction for someone who is not as familiar with The Cure. And for The Cure collectors, this limited edition version is a good deal (the two new songs on Greatest Hits, plus the Acoustic Hits disc). This limited edition of The Cure's Greatest Hits is definitely one of the better greatest hits CDs to come out over the past year.
