Romeo Must Die

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16,1979 in Brooklyn, NY to Micheal and Diane Haughton. When Aaliyah was 5, she, her brother Rashaad, and her parents moved to Detroit, MI. At the age of 11, Aaliyah had been singing in shows with her Aunt Gladys Knight. Around that age Aaliyah also made her t.v. debut on the then popular show, Star Search. Unfortantely, like most of her now famous peers, Aaliyah lost to another contestant. Aaliyah also attended the Detroit High School for the Performing Arts, where she graduated with a 4.0 GPA But long before she graduated, Aaliyah met a young star by the name of R. Kelly. Kelly soon became Aaliyah's mentor and produced her debut album, AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER, which was released May 24, 1994. With this album, Aaliyah released a string of hits that included, AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER,BACK AND FOURTH, and the remake of the Isley Brother's hit AT YOUR BEST. But after AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER had been released and doing well, Aaliyah took a break to finish high school. When Aaliyah returned in 1997 with her follow up album, ONE IN A MILLION, she had a whole new group of people around her. For this album, she sought help from new comers MISSY ELLIOT and producer TIMBALAND. Together they mixed hard beats with the sound of Aaliyah's soft voice. ONE IN A MILLION also produced huge hits such as HOT LIKE FIRE,4 PAGE LETTER, IF YOUR GIRL OLY KNEW etc. The following brought Aaliyah her first of 2 Grammy nominations for the summer hit ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY?, which was on the DOCTOR DOOLITTLE soundtrack. But once again Aaliyah disapeared, only this time it was to film her acting debut in the action thriller ROMEO MUST DIE (co-starring Jet-Li). Aaliyah receieved rave reviews for her perfomance in the movie and her second Grammy nomination for the song TRY AGAIN. Aaliyah also produced the soundtrack for ROMEO MUST DIE, in which she contributed 4 songs. Aaliyah also recieved a VMA for TRY AGAIN. Along with ROMEO MUST DIE, Aaliyah had also starred as a 4,000 century old mother of all vampires, AKASHA, in Anne Rice's QUEEN OF THE DAMNED. She was also cast in the MATRIX 2&3. While filming THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED,Aaliyah had recorded her third album, AALIYAH. The album was released July 17, 2001. When asked how the album differed from the first two, she descibed it as showcasing her growth and maturity as both a person and a artist. On August 25, 2001, after finishing a video shoot for he single ROCK THE BOAT, Aaliyah and eight others were tragically killed in a plane crash off the coast of the Bahamas. Despite her untimely death, Aaliyah's work and legacy will live on. This was proven with her certifed platinum tribute album I CARE 4 YOU, released December 10, 2002. Aaliyah was and will always be a star shinning bright.
