By now you may know about iDrive (BMW 745i First Drive, January). Standard
on all 7 Series cars worldwide, it features a single control knob on the
center console (part computer mouse, part video-game joystick) that operates
numerous functions not critical to driving the car. These range from the stereo
system, air conditioning and navigation to the telephone, emergency services
and onboard computer. Equally accessible to the driver and front passenger,
iDrive reduces the number of switches and buttons on the dash because various
electronic menus appear only as needed on the dash's color monitor. Problem
is, even after studying the 745i's thick owner's manual, it can be downright
difficult — and frustrating — to accomplish some intended iDrive tasks.

CHICAGO (Tribune Media) - After years of promises that it was going to
revamp its lineup, Caddy has delivered, with Escalade and CTS attracting
some younger folks into showrooms for the first time and older folks back
after a lengthy absence.
Escalade and CTS will be followed by a host of new vehicles -- the Escalade
ESV, a larger SUV, early next year as a 2003 model derived from the Chevrolet
Suburban (the current Escalade is derived from the smaller Chevy Tahoe);
the SRX, a so-called "sport-activity vehicle" crossover, and the XLR roadster
for '04; the next-generation Seville sedan for '05. The DeVille, the GM division's
volume sales leader, is waiting until 2006 for a real makeover.
