Band Biography

Told by: Brian Medlin

Guitarists tim leo and chris masciotti decided to get together and start a band. this was when they both had opportunities to be in other bands such as xiii pfp and blue collar underworld. chris' brother nick masciotti played drums. they asked me (brian m.) to do vocals since they heard i had in another band before. i accepted, and we had about two songs with me on vocals. we were called relapse. at this time, i was in two bands. i also played drums in a band with brian schmutz and sharif riad (who later joined blue collar underworld). we never had a band name. anyway, after relapse practices, we would mess around with me on drums. we basically started to like that lineup, so i became the drummer. we asked brian schmutz to play bass, so that kind of ended the band we had going. brian schmutz started writing lyrics to songs, until we wanted him to focus strictly on the vocals. and so we needed a bassist. we asked chris' brother nick masciotti to play. so once again, he was in the band (but as the bassist). so that was our lineup for a while. we played a bunch of shows. and before we came out with the tape on double down records, we changed our name to inkling. nick played bass up until the release of "minute" on double down records. after that came out, he went off to college. we asked our friend eric haag, who was the singer/guitarist of a punk band called the curveshooters at that time. shortly after, inkling became a full time band for him, and the rest of us. we played tons more shows, came out with a split seven inch with charlie brown gets a valentine on spoiled records. we went on our first tour with them. then we came out with "miscommunication" on hex records. we were playing more shows then ever, almost every weekend after that cd came out. we did a few weekend tours with charlie brown gets a valentine and now she's gone. we did our longest tour by ourselves in august 2000. we played with some pretty big bands and at great festivals such as hell fest and monster fest. eric haag quit on the bass because he was going away to school. so we were without a bassist for a few months. then, justin labarge from five stars for failure joined the band. and we were back to playing plenty of shows again. but inkling only lasted for a few months after that, when brian schmutz, vocalist, decided to call it quits. and so we all did, for inkling. i asked brian schmutz if i could put this up on the inkling site before it went down, and he said it was okay. so if you want to put it up on yours, it should be no problem. it's from the bad apple theory: "each one of us knows that this is where we're going, and that this is what we want... but nothing is forever." the song wasn't written about the band breaking up, because it was written when we went on that tour in 2000. but i think some lines can be applied. well, i hope that helps clear things up a little bit. so much went on, it's weird to summarize it in sentences. sorry if it seems a little confusing. i sort of gave you the history of relapse along with the history of inkling, but i figured it was necessary.
