______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ An American tragedy has occurred which has caused the untimely death of the Melfest bluegrass festival. This event had been promoted at White Lake, N. C. since 1999, attracting larger audiences every year. In 2007, the promoters decided to enlarge their festival parking lot by one more acre to accommodate more vehicles and RVs. This proved to be a costly mistake. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources hit the promoters with a fine of $45,000.00. In addition, the promoters were ordered to remove all of the parking lot dirt, at an additional cost of $30,000.00. The 2009 MelFest had to be cancelled, even though six bluegrass bands had already been booked and extensive advertising had been done. It is doubtful whether MelFest will ever be promoted again. Something is terribly wrong when common sense is thrown to the wind and replaced by a mindless bureaucracy which allows such a thing as this to happen. ------------------------------------Share your comments at: jmelvin@ec.rr.com.
