Hero: Point Zero began in March/April of 2001 as Shawn Huffman(vocals/samples), Josh Marietti(drums), Matt Armitage(guitar), and twin brothers Justin(bass) and Jason Marietti(vocals). It was the first band for all its members, though at the time; Josh, Jason, and Justin had been playing together for a few years. “HPZ” came together as a means of expressing repressed emotion, simply by playing covers of songs that influenced them, even potentially move on and try writing some of their own music. That is, when they’d grown together enough to do so. After learning one cover, (Relative Ash's "Bounce"), HPZ began working on original songs, and never looked back.
Two months later, on July 7th, Hero: point Zero played live for the first time in a small basement in Ishpeming, alongside a local black metal band (Domain Malevolence, also their 1st show). The show lasted just over an hour, as both the bands were just beginning to achieve some grasp on their crafts. Over the next year, HPZ continued to write and play at such local venues as the American Legion post 144, Casino Bar, Flints Bar, Northern Michigan University, Marquette Mountain, The Watering Trough (Saginaw, MI), Club Aurora, the Village Pub, numerous house parties, and more.
In the summer of 2002, the band self produced and recorded their first demo, entitled "Value," which contained 10 original tracks (No longer available). Just after the completion of the demo, the band underwent a lineup change, as they welcomed Jayson Longacre to the duty of the drummer. “Bluehair” had an enormous impact on the band, completely changing the tempo and overall sound of our music. The band began to grow, while playing many gigs in the following months. Jason performed a show with Relative Ash around this time as a guest vocalist. Shawn (SRSK) moved to Dayton to pursue a career in tattooing, and is still an avid member of the band. He's made sporadic trips back to the tundra to play shows and participate in “band activities,” and assist in the lyrics and artistic end of the band.
The basis for creating music is to express memories and emotions we've felt throughout our lives, some of which must be expressed this way in order to refrain from uncivil or even violent acts. Music, thereby, acts as a vent in which we cast all of our negativity out though.
"Hero: Point Zero" gives reference to the simplicity and frailty of our lives. Within a blink, we're here, from just a speck of dust to a living, breathing life form, and back to dust again. Before that point, no one had ever known a thing about you, nor had you served any purpose. And just the same it seems, within a blink, physical life is over, just a memory that will be packed away, and dusted off of the shelf in time. The beauty of all this is that fate does NOT entirely tie in with who we are, or who we will be. You see, it's up to us to fill the pages, and shape ourselves into something that can be held on to. Something that is postive. We are all meant to impact others in an individual way, a completely unique way. It's up to us to find our calling and bring it to life. Find yourself a niche to fit in, don’t be consumed by all that you see around you. Everyday, the world will tease and taunt you with its temptations.
FIND OUT WHERE YOU FIT IN. Begin to start a life of your own and own up to the promises you make for yourself. Believe in dreams. Cast away the empty things that only keep you from being who you really are. BE YOU. You and only you know what’s “right” and what’s “wrong.” Don’t try so hard to be like someone you’re not, just feel life… feel it as a series of moments… decisions and compliments, we can either fuck it up, or make the best of it.
LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT.
