For the third time in her career and the first time since 2003, Tina Arena has the No. 1 single on The TrackList, as "Italian Love Song" climbs up one rung to swipe the top spot from U2's "Vertigo" (which slides 1-2 despite gaining in points). And for the first time in a few weeks, a new song has broken into the Top 5: Destiny's Child's devastatingly addictive "Lose My Breath". That beat is crazay! Meanwhile, breaking into the Top 10 is Shania Twain, along with Mark McGrath and/or Billy Currington, who appear on alternate versions of Twain's "Party For Two." Though the McGrath-flavored pop cut is receiving more spins in my CD-Changer, I do happen to dig the Currington-featuring country take as well. They're both fun. Meanwhile, Daniel Bedingfield leaps 25-17 and for the second time earns the "Biggest Mover" title with "Nothing Hurts Like Love." Lastly, Christy Carlson Romano debuts at an impressively high No. 26 with "Dive In", thanks to all the trouble I went through to find it. But, it was worth it. It's a great pop song.
So, I picked up 2 new CDs this week, including Gwen Stefani's Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (which debuts at No. 1 on the albums list) and the Scissor Sisters' self-titled debut album (which is a new entry at No. 2). And guess what? I love them both. Love. Angel... reminds me of Holly Valance's State Of Mind, thanks to its way cool retro-'80s stylings. As for Scissor Sisters, I believe there is no real comparison, except maybe '70s Elton John. So, two great new CD's in one week? That's hot. ...I'm sorry. I promise I'll never say that again. Really.
CRAP SINGLE OF THE WEEK: LIL' JON & THE EASTSIDE BOYZ "WHAT U GON' DO" Okay, so this actually works for me on sort of a guilty-pleasure level, since I have such a blast mocking it. But, as a work of art? It totally blows. The beat is heavy enough, but grating after five and a half minutes, and none of the rappers are distinct or versatile enough to overcome it. But let's get to the real problem here: Lil' Jon (né John Smith), whose own crunk language and odd shout-outs (already a cliché, thanks in part to Dave Chapelle's brilliant impersonation of him) have become just plain ridiculous. The chorus? "What they gon' do? / Sh**!" Lovely. I'll give you just one more example, and it should be enough drive my point home: "Those motherf***ing n*ggas still motherf***ing lookin' over here and sh**!" Um...yeah. C
