Eminem retains control of the TrackList with "Just Lose It" for what looks like the final week, thanks to a significant drop in rotations and interest. The main contenders for next week's Number One? Tina Arena, who continues to grow at No. 2 with "Italian Love Song" and U2, who's "Vertigo" surges 4-3 on another strong boost. At this point, I'd give the slight edge to U2, though it's pretty difficult to predict what will happen in 7 days. Elsewhere, Holly Valance's "Please Please Me" is the Top Debut at No. 33, leading a pack of new entries that also includes Chingy Featuring Janet Jackson (No. 43), Fiona Apple (No. 47) and Jesse McCartney (No. 50). The Biggest Mover is Daniel Bedingfield, whose "Nothing Hurts Like Love" blasts 50-30. Others showing impressive progress: Nelly & Tim McGraw (32-21), John Mellencamp (46-35), Mick Jagger (43-36) and Maria Mena (48-40). ...Valance remains on top of the albums list while Rilo Kiley rebounds, Eminem falters and Janet Jackson re-enters.
It's very first week it debuted at No. 50. The next week, it made an oh-so-incredible leap to 19. Then the following week, it bounced up a bit more to 16. Then it got stuck lingering in the bottom half of the Top 20 for three months… I'm speaking, of course, of The Killers' "Somebody Told Me," which, in week 15, is finally showing true signs of chart momentum again, hopping from 19 to its new peak of, coincidentally, 15. This is thanks mostly to my recent purchase of the album, Hot Fuss, which has given a boost to the rotation count. As well, the version featured on the album is a bit different than the single version I had, and this sense of newness also accounts for the upward mobility. ... On a final note, I want to point out that I finally saw the clip for Mellencamp's "Walk Tall" this week, which is pretty much accountable for its nice 11-point gain. It's a cute, thought-provoking little video that fits well with the song. I saw it on Netscape, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. It's definitely worth checking out.
CRAP SINGLE OF THE WEEK: PARIS HILTON "SCREWED" Non-singing celebrities dabbling in music is nothing new (sadly), but was anyone out there really clamoring for an album by this vacant, rich-bitch "personality"? "Screwed" is a rather generic stab at dance-pop that, really, has nothing going for it, thanks to beats and melodies that are all too familiar and boring. As for Miss Hilton's vocals? They could be worse, but it's actually kind of hard to tell through all the electronic masking and enhancement. I heard that pseudo-celebrity (and sister of Hilary) Haylie Duff has blocked the release of Paris' "Screwed" because she has just unleashed her own take on the song, which was apparently recorded first. Egads, two people felt the need to record this? Well, I haven't heard Haylie's version yet, but if it's anything like Paris', it'll be strictly be a C+ record.
