On the Halloween '04 edition of the J-SKWD TrackList, Fiona Apple surrenders to both Eminem and Tina Arena. Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" slides 1-3, allowing Arena's "Italian Love Song" to boost 4-2 and Em's "Just Lose It" to propel from 3 to claim the top spot. Meanwhile, there's a plethora of debuts. Yes, a plethora. First up is Snoop Dogg and Pharrell, whose "Drop It Like It's Hot" slams onto the list at No. 24, easily making it the biggest hit here for Mr. D-O-Double-G. Other new entries include Ashanti's "Only U" (No. 45), Alicia Keys' "Karma" (No. 46), Jem's "Maybe I'm Amazed" (from The O.C.'s second soundtrack, No. 47) and Mick Jagger's "Old Habits Die Hard" (from the upcoming remake of Alife, No. 49). And because I'm predictable, I'll now mention the notable movers, including Will Young (finally making the Top 10 in week 14), Hilary Duff (who scoots 26-17), The Black Eyed Peas (by shifting 34-21, they're the week's Biggest Movers) and Nelly & Tim McGraw (who jump 44-34).
For the second week in a row, there are new debuts by albums I've actually bought. In at No. 2 are The Killers, with Hot Fuss. Good record, I guess, but it all starts sounding the same by the end. Right below, at No. 3, is Katy Rose with her self-titled debut. That CD...well…is merely OK. Rose isn't a very good songwriter, but the ballads are pretty decent. Well, at least better than the upbeat tracks. So, obviously, neither is impressive enough to topple Rilo Kiley, who continue to grow on me with More Adventurous, and stay at No. 1 in week 2.
CRAP SINGLE OF THE WEEK: FINGER ELEVEN "ONE THING" Yeah, it's a little old now, but still quite popular, sitting in the Top 20 of the current Billboard Hot 100. So, it must be asked: Why? What exactly about this god-awful '90's flashback appeals to radio audiences? The lame lite-rock sound, with an annoying abundance of acoustic guitars? Ohhh! Maybe it's the horrendous lyrics! Y'know, with the inane, lazy rhymes? I mean, they actually couple "thing" with "thing" and "time" with "time"(!) Plus, there's even a block that goes "Even though I know/I don't want to know/Yeah I guess I know". Insert painful shudder here. The next line is "I just hate how it sounds". Yeah, you too? F
