Well, long time no hear, eh? I don't think I've done an actual chart commentary for, like, months. I didn't get to rave about PJ Harvey's awesome new album. I didn't get to talk about all the recent fantastic singles, from the likes of Mase, Kelly Clarkson, Rilo Kiley and a few others. But there are a couple of things I'm gonna play catch-up with, namely Joss Stone, my Karen Sisco soundtrack and Will Young's curious cover of OutKast's "Hey Ya". So, first thing's first. Last week, Joss Stone made an incredible debut on the TrackList with "You Had Me", which blasted in at No. 2, a J-SKWD rarity anymore (the last top 10 debut came from the Beastie Boys, who entered at No. 9 with "Ch-Check It Out" in May). An amazing song, "You Had Me" could be set to blow up like no one's business. With it's fierce message and driving soul rhythm, it's unlike anything I've heard in quite a while, and creates an excitement I haven't felt since...who knows when. The album, Mind, Body & Soul, drops Sept. 28, and I can't wait.

Meanwhile, I guess I'll have to keep myself occupied with my very own Karen Sisco soundtrack, which I actually went back and re-made this week, adding a few tracks and re-arranging others, making a stronger, more cohesive work. It's a great CD, if I do say so myself, and reminds me so much of the show...which was cancelled after 7 episodes on ABC (three more aired on USA). It was a great series, truly underrated, and I guess my soundtrack and VCR recordings will have to tide me over until an eventual DVD release.

Lastly, let's talk about Brit Pop Idol winner Will Young for a second, shall we? When I first heard he had covered Andre 3000's "Hey Ya!", one of the best pop singles of the last 10 years, I wanted to laugh out loud...the concept just sounded so ludicrous. Well, needless to say, thanks to its chart performance, the song is a hell of a lot better than I expected. He went and turned it into a graceful, gospel-tinged soul anthem. You may never realize the heartbreak inherent in Andre's lyrics unless you hear this version. Bravo, Mr. Young, bravo.
