"Humpty Dumpty" #1 For 1 Week
|
IN A SURPRISE LEAP, "HUMPTY Dumpty," the lead single from Aimee Mann's Lost in Space, scorches a path to the top, soaring 7-1. That pushes Avril Lavigne's "Complicated," the champ for the past two weeks, down to No. 5. Nelly and Kelly Rowland retain the runner-up position with "Dilemma" while "Gangsta Lovin'," the Eve and Alicia Keys duet, stands strong in 3rd place. Invading the Top 10 this week are Lavigne (for the second time in just a few short months) and LeAnn Rimes, with "Sk8er Boi" (No. 8) and "Life Goes On" (No. 9), respectively. The biggest mover this week is "You Made Me Find Myself," by Tina Arena, which blazes ahead from 67 to 22. This has been a good year on the J-SKWD lists for an artist otherwise struggling to break through in the U.S. "You Made Me..." is the fourth song from her 2001 Australian album Just Me to hit the top 40, following "Dare You To Be Happy" (which topped out at No. 2 in March), "Soul Mate #9" (a fast comer-and-goer that reached #18 in its quick run), and "Symphony Of Life" (which recently spent seven weeks at No. 3). Fabolous visits the Top 40 for the first time as a lead artist as his "Trade It All Part 2" shoots from 43 to 25. He previously made the Top 20 (#14, to be exact) as Tweet's guest on a slight remix of "Oops! Oh My." The only debut this week, at No. 73, is Sheryl Crow's "Safe and Sound," a Sept. 11 tribute song.
I'D LIKE TO TAKE A second and mention why a brief ecstasy flowed over me on Tuesday (9/10). Both Aimee Mann (see above) and Marianne Faithfull made wonderful appearances on late night TV. Faithfull, re-scheduled after she was to originally appear on Sept. 2 (the host opted for a vacation instead), was interviewed by and later performed for David Letterman and his CBS Late Show. Her obvious song choice was the current single, "Wherever I Go." Mann, meanwhile, was welcomed by apparent outside-of-work friend Craig Kilborn just about an hour later on the same network's Late Late Show. She offered a low-key performance of this week's Number One single, "Humpty Dumpty." Both musicians acquitted themselves nicely, but the promotional support apparently did more for Mann on the J-SKWD Top 75 (again, No. 1) than it did for Faithfull (who - ouch! - tumbles 21-63, though the fall has nothing to do with her performance; the song is merely becoming too odd a fit for the current playlist). |
