PEDIGREE

"At the age of 16 Roger Burlingham enlisted in the British Army, serving in his uncle Roger Burlingham's Regiment. He rose through the ranks until he held the rank of Captain. The then Captain Roger Burlingham and his company were ordered to America, and he landed with his troops at Boston, Mass. on May 10, 1650. Soon after reaching America, he resigned his army commission and went up into the Connecticut Colony for the purpose of purchasing a farm, with the intention of bringing his wife and son to America, only to learn that his wife had died in the meantime. He and Thomas Griffian purchased 100 acres of land on Feb. 16 1656 at Pequot (now New London), Conn. Thomas Griffian was Roger's brother-in-law. (Thomas Griffian was married to Roger's sister Elizabeth). The record and text of this deed "Suffolk Deeds Liber III., page 455. Roger sold this farm 1 Mar 1659.
On June 23, 1662, and May 13, 1663 Roger purchased land from the Cooweeset Indians refered to as The Masnantatack Purchase and soon after found himself in court over the legal ownership of the land described as "being called Toskeonke, on the north side of the Pawtuxet River". Roger Burlingame, Thomas Ralph, and John Harrud claimed they bought the land from the Indians, while W. Field and W. Harris claimed the land from a grant from the King. The proceedings are documented in the Cushman Papers. Burlingame, Ralph and Harrud finally won out due to the death of W. Harris and public sentiment. The records show "And it is ordered that Thomas Ralph, Roger Burlingham and John Harrud, or any two of them, shall be the persons to make the rate and levy the assessments on the inhabitants of Mashantatack". Proceedings of the General Assembly of Sept. 25, 1671 ordered to levy a tax of 40 shillings.
On 3 Oct 1663 he married his second wife and had 9 more children. It should be noted that his first son Roger (now grown), along with his wife, came to America and joined the family at the homestead now belonging to Roger. Tragedy repeated itself, and Roger Jr's wife died in childbirth along with their son, and Roger Jr. died soon after. Roger Jr., his wife and infant son are buried in the family plot on the original homestead, and were documented again in May 20, 1765 by William Burlingame Jr.
This leads to some confusion with dates and Jrs. because after the first son Roger died, Roger Sr. had another son and named him Roger also.
On May 6, 1690 Roger was elected Deputy to the General Assembly but after much debate over him not being a resident of that district was removed (Proceedings of the General Assembly of May 16,1690.
The name Burlingame is the American corruption of the English Burlingham. This Roger was known as Burlingham, but after he moved to the Rhode Island Colony, his name appears as both Burlingham and Burlingame. When he resigned his commission with the British Army he left behind his title of Captain. Although there are many references to Captain Roger Burlingame during his time, those references were of Roger Jr. who was a Captain in the militia."
