She was supposedly pregnant by another man and was fined 10 pounds. To avoid further scandal, her husband removed her to Roxbury, Massachusetts, where she had the baby, which died shortly after birth. Gossip that the illegitimate baby may have been murdered by its mother, or possibly step-father, or both, never amounted to much. Testimony from other women servants in the house where the illegitimate baby was conceived suggests that Martha was epileptic and was taken advantage of during one of her fits.
